Senator McCain has this one on the money….to agree to back any peace process where Assad remains in power will not bring stability to the region and would rightly impugn our national integrity…it would be another foreign policy blunder akin to backing the Shah, arming Saddam, and abandoning Afghanistan after the Soviet withdrawal. Assad has to go into permanent exile at minimum if he leaves willingly, although he deserves the full war crimes prosecution treatment if possible diplomatically.
