Tees Tech Startups #1

Tees Tech Startups is a new monthly meetup for anyone working on, or in, a tech startup in the Tees Valley (and wider if you want to travel).

Why has this been created?

There are a lot of great initiatives that support the Tees Valley startup scene but to my knowledge no individual event that focuses specifically on startups — especially in the tech sector. We have some brilliant events for tech (Refresh Teesside, NEDev, Gamebridge) but this is going to be slightly different. The events will be designed to link founders (and prospective founders), whilst providing insightful and experiential feedback from people who’ve been there and got the t-shirt.

Who is it for?

Tees Tech Startups is for anyone working on or in a tech startup in the Tees Valley — and by a startup I mean the wider sense.

“A company 5 years old can still be a startup” — Paul Graham, YCombinator

We welcome anyone who is also looking to start a new business or get involved with a startup — so any devs/designers/marketers etc looking to engage, or anyone with an idea for a new venture is very much welcome.

Why attend?

> Share ideas
> Discuss problems
> Learn
> Expand your network
> Make what you want of it

What’s the structure?

To be honest, probably yet to be defined. We’ll be starting off with a similar structure to Refresh Teesside — 3–4 x 5-minute talks. Events are not going to be themed to start off with, meaning that there’s a mix of different talks each month. For example, it could look like this….
— Speaker 1: My experience in the startup world
— Speaker 2: How to gain traction
— Speaker 3: Why I introduced the use of Product X into my startup
— Speaker 4: Pitching my idea

However, for the first event, it’s going to be pretty informal. Just turn up and meet some cool people in a similar space to you.

Why does it sit outside DigitalCity?

I’ve started this event with a view that in time others will come on board and support it moving forward. I didn’t think it fair to ask people to give up their spare time whilst I’m essentially getting paid, and therefore I’m running this in my own time outside of DC. The event itself obviously fits in line with what we’re doing in DC, and where possible I will be looking to share opportunities available through DC.

First event

The first event will take place on Tuesday 12th September @ Boho One in Middlesbrough. This is going to be pretty informal to start off with, so just turn up and meet some cool people.
