View of the Week: On the US Elections With the Latest From Hillary Clinton & Donald Trump (With an Update on a Newsweek Story On The WikiLeaks Emails)
It has been a whirlwind on the US Political Scene as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton continue onward with their campaigns in earnest. We begin by noting the latest as underscored by the team at Five Thirty Eight:
Hillary Clinton @ 84% Donald Trump @ 16%
What was quite striking was how the Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, Greg Walden, noted as to what this election cycle is about–landing an airplane in a hurricane–as noted by the Washington Post’s Daily 202. Our team found the analogy of a Hurricane to be quite striking — but this was underscored by the NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll that showed Hillary Clinton to be 11 points ahead in likely voters. The Republicans, in the meantime, are trying to walk a fine line especially as a number of them are eyeing the 2020 race–including Ted Cruz and Mike Pence who have decided to side with Mr. Trump through the very end. This is as Mr. Trump’s assertion that Mrs Clinton would be in jail has caused profound concerns–as calls for imprisoning her has been a regular feature of Trump Rallies. The Guardian of London shared some perspective on it from legal experts over the past 24 hours. This is as Mr. Trump has noted his view that shackles have been taken off him–and as the Speaker has said he will not revoke his support for Donald Trump as he has said he will not defend him.
In the meantime, other surprises from Mr. Trump include this that the Politico‘s “morning shift” reported in its daily Summary:
TALES FROM THE APPRENTICE: The Associated Press reported last week that when Trump was a reality TV boss on “The Apprentice” he “repeatedly demeaned women with sexist language.” (The Trump campaign denied it.) The AP story reportedly prompted “Access Hollywood” to forage for its now-famous Trump hot-mic audio , and rumors continue to swirl that the “Apprentice” archives contain similarly lewd or otherwise inappropriate Trump outtakes. Producer Mark Burnett, a Trump friend, has threatened to sue anyone who leaks them, but David Brock, who runs a network of pro-Clinton Democratic groups, has volunteered to pay the legal fees of anyone who does.
Now one such outtake has leaked — or rather, the transcript of an outtake. The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein and Dana Liebelson report that during taping of a 2010 episode about the marketing of two country music singers, Trump objected to one, Emily West, because, well … let’s let the Donald tell it. “”I assume you’re gonna leave this off,” Trump says, according to the transcript obtained by the HuffPo. “Don’t put this shit on the show, you know. But her skin, her skin sucks, okay? I mean her skin, she needs some serious fuckin’ dermatology.”
Stein and Liebelson confirmed the gist of the conversation with Cindi Lauper, who appeared on the episode and was present. “Yes, of course,” Lauper told them. “Of all people to talk about people’s skin! What the hell is going on with his?”
Politico is also reporting this morning on its’ website that the Republican National Committee is still standing by Mr. Trump despite the reporting over the weekend to the contrary. In the meantime, the conservative Media continues to be underscoring the challenges faced by Mrs. Clinton with this “view” from the Washington Examiner This morning:
Hillary is not Honest Abe: In an interesting moment during the second presidential debate Sunday evening, Hillary Clinton compared herself to Abraham Lincoln. She did so when asked about transcripts of speeches she was paid tens of millions of dollars for delivering to banks and other financial institutions. In those speeches, she endorsed open trade and open borders, as well as curtailing Social Security benefits. She told one group that she had to tell them one thing about her policy stances and the public another. ” Considering Clinton’s big lead in the latest polls, those bankers who paid to hear her laugh about her false public posturing are probably already measuring drapes for the Lincoln Bedroom. They got in early, like good investors do, and paid for that right.”
What is absolutely clear is this: there will not be a dull moment until November 8–It must be noted that voting has already begun throughout the country.
