Is Quora Emotional Porn?

I’ve been on Quora for a few months now, and I have to say it is a great platform!

Yet I cannot tell you how many times I have had to downvote posts just so as not to be bombarded with pictures of a sad dog sitting on the side of the road, or a guy and his 90-year-old mother, or a visage of a war-torn third world country.

We must experience pain and suffering if we want to experience joy; the world is not perfect.

Despite what you would like to believe, dogs do not exude happiness all the time. People do get old, and the longer our lived experience with that person, the harder it is to say goodbye, at least for now.

Oh yes, I forgot — not everybody on this planet is experiencing life in a first-world utopia — some of us must live in less than ideal conditions.

I might add that Quora’s so-called “emotional clickbait” does have a certain quality to it, and indeed, it serves a particular purpose; it sparks basic emotions and reminds us that we are human.

Sometimes, we need reminders — in this day and age, we can get so wrapped up in what we think the world wants of us, that we sometimes feel lost.

Sometimes, we need to grip on to our basic emotions to prevent being controlled by our ego.

At least the “bare-your-soul-posts” are better than those ads that say, “Here is a list of Hollywood actors that got hooked on drugs,” and keep us mindlessly engaged for hours while spreading cookies all over our hard drive.

At least the inane and unanswerable questions of whether Bruce Lee could bugger up Arnold Schwarzenegger satisfy a misguided male ego craving.

Quora is meant to help people that need answers, and the more you genuinely help people, the better the outcome for you. As long as you avoid answering silly questions — where nothing you say will answer the person’s inquiries or allay their fears — Quora can be mutually beneficial.

A silly question might be, “when will the US stock market crash in 2021”. The answer is,

a) that no one knows.

b) If you say 2021, then I have just over three months to choose from in my answer — I mean, give me a break!.

Quora is a business that exists to make money — and if emotional porn keeps people glued to a site that also answers important questions, so be it.
