Seeing the Northern Lights in Finland

As the provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of California Riverside, Dallas Rabenstein assisted with the formation of the school’s strategic plan, UCR 2020: The Path to Preeminence. A teacher of chemistry for decades, Dallas Rabenstein also enjoys traveling and recently visited Finland.

Visitors to Finland will not want to miss the opportunity to view the Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights. The best region in Finland to view the Northern Lights is Lapland. While there, visitors have the option of seeing the spectacular natural lights that are on display between August and April.

With six national parks, Finnish Lapland offers the opportunity to view the region’s 200,000 reindeer and explore the snow-blanketed wilderness via skis, snowmobiles, or dogsleds. Lapland’s towns offer visitors a diverse range of places to stay, from treehouses in Rovaniemi to glass villas beside the SnowCastle on the bay of Bothnia.
