And it almost cost me everything in Las Vegas

I used to drive my thirteen year old daughter Annie and some of her friends to school as part of a carpool. I was experimenting with the Keto diet at the time. One morning I ate a bag of sausages while I drove. Annie’s eyes accosted me and she slammed the door goodbye at dropoff. This was another nice thank you to me for spending my days worried about getting her the right colored pencils, binders and also foods that she prefers at the grocery store.

My wife called.

“Were you eating a bag of meat in the car this…

Poor guy!

My book, Confessions of a Crypto Millionaire: My Unlikely Escape from Corporate America, was published in September 2019. By January 2020 I’d largely finished marketing it. I’d appeared on dozens of podcasts and radio stations. The book was covered by a variety of mainstream, tech and investing outlets, including The Hustle, CBS MarketWatch, Forbes, and Hacker Noon. I did a Reddit AMA and filmed a segment for Bloomberg TV. The book was selected for a BookBub deal, which generated more than a thousand sales in a day, sending it to the top of several Amazon best seller category lists. …

As the father of three kids, my initial strong fears relating to coronavirus all involved them. I imagined one of them unable to get the ventilator they needed to survive and how I’d do anything to get it for them. Thankfully we have enough aggregate data about the virus to know that kids are almost always immune from the worst effects, the viral pneumonia. Of course who wants to tempt fate? And there are plenty of kids with compromised immunity, so I still want my kids and all kids to avoid contracting the virus at all costs. …

This is not me

For the past six years, my life has been a series of awesome obsessions: blogging, 2013–2015; crypto, 2015–2017; writing and publishing a book about my career and time in crypto, 2017–2019.

In 2020 I’m not maniacally driven to do anything. I’m meandering down a number of interesting paths, some of which show promise, then hit a brick wall (standup comedy); others which will develop over the next few months (helping turn Arizona blue); and ongoing minor commitments that help me feel like I’m doing something worthwhile for myself or others, (meditation, volunteering at a food bank).

But I’m looking forward…

I’m back in my room regrouping and thinking deeply about lunch in 15 minutes after the first half day of the biggest crypto/blockchain conference in the world. A few observations:

This is an incredibly diverse audience. Yes it’s still mostly white men, but the proportion of others seems to be growing. But what I’m referring to is the knowledge level of those attending. One moment I wowed a befuddled French man with my insights (lucky him!) …

Alan Turing, a giant of encryption, not blockchains

It’s an old story — the central servers of big, blue chip companies: Home Depot, Target, ADP and now Yahoo! have been hacked and everything from credit card data to passwords have been stolen, to be used in the dark markets, presumably. Even the FBI, the IRS and the Democratic Party have been breached.

The truth is that data breaches are a systemic problem rather than a deficiency of passwords, security patches and firewalls. Any server farm that holds millions of records in one spot and needs to feed that information to computers around the world (i.e. retail stores, agents…

I’ve formed a new SF Bay Area Ethereum Meetup, targeted to be accessible for non-developers. It’s called the Ethereum Economy Meetup. The name is a reflection of the various disciplines, outside professions, and related parties who will play an increasingly important role in mainstreaming Ethereum in the coming years.

The focus of the Ethereum Foundation and the thousands of developers working around the world to build out the Ethereum platform is to CONTINUE TO DEVELOP. (They don’t need me to tell them that).

For those of us who believe in decentralization, have committed to the cause as a funder of…

You smell like fiat

Soon, gold rush fever will hit PR firms as cryptocurrency and blockchain projects take off and start solving real world problems. Every crypto team will want press and attention. Every flack will promise to make them the next Google.

In an act of foolish generosity considering that my firm, Zealot Communications is working in this space, these are some insights that guide my work in cryptocurrency:

Timing is everything.

These are early days. The decentralized applications that run on cryptocurrency are mostly in alpha release (or not yet launched). They are slow. They are not user friendly. They have frustrating bugs. They are…
