One of the biggest video game franchises, Call of Duty, released the multiplayer beta for its upcoming game, CoD WWII. With the series returning to the World War II era, labeling it “boots on the ground” it serves as a much needed break from futuristic jetpacks. The series’ last game to be set during WWII was with World at War, and after playing the game’s multiplayer beta it appears that this new installment is a revitalization of WaW.

The game’s multiplayer beta offered traditional Call of Duty game modes such as Team Deathmatch and Domination. It also gave players a chance to try War mode, similar to Battlefield 1’s Operation except on a smaller scale (considering map and team size).

CoD WWII emphasizes trench warfare and the style of combat/gameplay associated, such as ‘camping’ becomes an incredibly useful, and reasonable tactic. With the use of different player roles, or Divisions, it brings a stylized choice of play as specific weapons are tied to each Division. There are 5 Divisions to choose from: Infantry, Airborne, Mountain, Armored and Expeditionary. During my time with the beta so far I’ve been playing as an Airborne unit, which are equipped with submachine guns like the Type 100 and silencer attachments.

Personalization and social aspects of the beta are just a taste of whats to come once CoD WWII releases. As always the mainstays of customization such as calling cards are included in the beta. When you join in a party with your friends or online teammates it puts you in a lobby where players assume poses that shows the full army unit/squad. Once the game releases, one can imagine the ways in which players will represent themselves with high quality gear earned through combat.

My time with this private multiplayer beta has been limited, having secured a way to play it bycreating a Hong Kong PSN account. The private beta on Playstation 4 ends on August 28th which gives me more time to have a hand at the different game modes and Divisions, as well as have a better impression and capture gameplay before its release on November 3rd.
