A Millennial’s View on News Information
I know there have already been a lot of articles written about millennial behavior, but many of them miss out on a major point I want to make. Millennial's don’t only use social media to be narcissistic, we also view it as a valuable source of reliable information.
Exhibit 1: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. etc. etc.
The major social media sites are a great place to get a lot of information quickly. Sure a lot of it is wrong, but those of us who care to know if information is correct easily can find that out with a few easy steps.
1. Look at the source. Is this a normally reliable source
2. Read the comments. Usually any information that is not fact is refuted by someone in the comments.
Exhibit 2: Wikipedia
We’ve heard many times not to use Wikipedia as a source. Well I haven’t personally, but I know so many that have. The question is why? Because anyone can change the content? Sure, thats a great reason. But what about looking at it this way too: Anyone can correct the content.
If you look at the revolutionary war on wikipedia you will find two very different viewpoints. One from those in the USA and another from the UK. These viewpoints are on a historical event, but the text books these two groups were taught from have drastically different accounts as you can imagine. Who is right, who is wrong? The answer lies in the middle and wikipedia allows the truth to come out instead of a narrative a single side would like to tell. In this way, crowd sourced information is the greatest source of globally accepted information.
Wikipedia is the most accurate encyclopedia on earth, but it also is the one that changes the most, that is a good thing and should be treated that way.
Social media allows us to crowdsource our news and not rely on only major media outlets that previous generations needed to rely on for day to day news. I have so many more ways to gather information. It doesn’t mean TV or newspapers don’t matter, but they only tell a part of the story of how we get our news. We aren’t stupid, we know organizations have an agenda. What social media does, that other sources do not, is require the source of information to be transparent and truthful.
