The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg does a brilliant job of depicting all of the factors involved in habit building. The book starts out by emphasizing the impact of habits in our lives. This book is a great read for someone who is interested in how habits form and how to change them. It provides psychological concepts without jargon making it easy to understand. To illustrate the importance of habits, the book uses a variety of examples to demonstrate their formula for habit formation. We will be going through my five biggest takeaways from this book, covering everything from how habits are formed to how we can change them.

My 5 Biggest Takeaways

1. How Are Habits Formed?

Duhigg gives us the basic formula for a habit to form: Cue-> Routine-> Reward. For example, you feel stressed (cue), you smoke a cigarette (routine) and you feel good (reward). The reward stimulates a part of your brain ( known as the central nervous system) giving you a good feeling and makes you crave the reward again when presented with the cue.
