I think the main point for facebook is that standard class notation makes it easier to do tooling like codemods and IDE integrations. Another point is that decorators can be used as well (although I don't think that was taken into consideration when they decided that)

I also liked how React.createClass worked, but I am not against classes either. They did have a big win on deprecating React.createClass because it also deprecated mixins (even though they could have deprecated mixins without deprecating React.createClass)
