I won’t argue that the Sixers didn’t get lucky with Simmons, but just wanted to point out the bigger picture, which I think “The Process” was attempting to keep in mind. In other words, while a last place finish any given year gives you a 25% chance at the first pick, consecutive years of terrible-ness increases the odds of that first pick quite a bit (up to just over 43% if you are last two consecutive years and better than 57% if you were to be last three years in a row). So, it still requires luck, but you are stacking the odds in your favor. Which it seems is what Hinkie was attempting to do.
