The Best Pizza Slice in San Francisco

I grew up in a pizza family. My grandfather founded a pizza restaurant in Chicago in the 70’s, and my uncles have grown it into a 25-store chain. Free pizza forever for me. I like to go on pizza odysseys — visit all the pizza places of a category in a city.

In San Francisco, I love Little Star’s deep dish pizza. BUT — there’s something better. The absolute best pizza slice in San Francisco is at a bakery called Arizmendi. There’s one on 24th and Valencia, and I think they have another location or two elsewhere.

Each day they start serving slices at 11am, and each day they only have one kind of pizza. It’s always vegetarian, but never routine. Common toppings include corn, gorgonzola, tomatoes, feta, spinach, and herbs, and it’ll often be painted with balsamic, pesto, or chipotle sauce.

The crust is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, not unlike a toasted English muffin. The cheese and toppings are so good.
