Trump wasn’t confused. It was an anti-Mormon dog whistle. He was pointing out that Mormons are “different” and suggesting that not supporting him would make those evangelical pastors “different” in a way similar to Mormons. He is appealing to the evangelicals’ anti-Mormon sentiments in an effort to garner their support.
