Dan Schneider Presents: Aaliyah Singing “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” on the “All That” Stage
Remember Aaliyah? The amazing young singer accomplished so much in just 22 years. Her awesome performance on “All That” in 1995 introduced a whole generation of kids to her ridiculous talents! For proof, check out the video.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah’s career started super young — at age 10! — when she appeared on “Star Search.” At 12 she was signed, then released her debut album “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number” in 1994. That’s the song she performed on “All That” in 1995, decked out in trendy sunglasses and a bandana. Now there’s a 90s look we wish pop stars would bring back!
You can watch her performance in full below. Beware: Coolness will ensue.
Aaliyah wasn’t just a delight on the stage, but the screen too. After releasing her second album “One in a Million,” produced with Missy Elliot and Timbaland, she appeared in the Jet Li action movie “Romeo Must Die.” The single “Try Again,” written for the soundtrack, topped the Billboard 100 based solely on airplay — a Billboard first — and earned her a Grammy to boot!
Another fun fact: The R&B darling was the youngest singer to perform at the Oscars when she performed “Journey to the Past” from “Anastasia” in 1998! Considering “Anastasia” is coming to Broadway soon (YAY!), that’s totally worth a watch too.
It was undoubtedly a tragedy when, in 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas. But now, Aaliyah is the stuff of legends. Besides winning over 30 awards, she’s had movies and documentaries made about her life, and is credited for revolutionizing hip hop and R&B!
Watching her perform back in 1995 for an audience filled with kids really takes us back to the good ol’ days, when you could spend the night laughing with the “All That” gang and get slimed with the decade’s Nickelodeon luminaries. As for us, we’re proud to continue groovin’ to Aaliyah’s jams over 20 years later!
