Lisa Foiles Answers Your Burning Questions About “All That”
The young actors on Nickelodeon’s sketch-comedy hit “All That” were a huge sensation during the show’s run, and Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell and Amanda Bynes were just a few of the beloved stars busting guts. It’s hard not to wonder what things were like behind the scenes, but it’s not everyday you run into a cast member to ask.
Well, it turns out there was one chance to ask about what being a kid on “All That” was like. Lisa Foiles, “All That” cast member from seasons 7 through 10, answered fans’ questions on Reddit back in 2011. You may know Lisa as Kaffy from the sketch “Sugar and Coffee,” which taught us all about the wonders and dangers of jitters and stimulants!
For those that missed it (hey, we’re not all Redditors), we’ve rounded up some of the best facts from her AMA.
1. According to Lisa, the best band to perform on “All That” was the Barenaked Ladies.
After their TV set, they played a full concert for the entire cast and crew.
2. Other musical guests were, well, a little bit strange.
Jesse McCartney wore a lot of hair gel, and P. Diddy had requested white lilies, full-length mirrors, and candles in his dressing room for a 2 minute set.
3. Tony Hawk is surprisingly humble.
When guest-starring he declined to say the line “BUT I’M TONY HAWK” because he didn’t want to come off as arrogant.
4. Repairman’s catch phrase was an accident.
The script said “Let me fix this thing-a-ma-jiggy” but Kel ended up saying “Let me fix this! MA-JIGGY!” Everyone loved it so the line stuck.
5. “All That” was shot all summer so kids could go to school.
Actors like Lisa spent a huge chunk of their childhoods on set and were constantly jumping back and forth between school and “All That.”
6. The coffee in “Sugar and Coffee” wa actually flat coke.
Needless to say it was super sticky. Lisa says she nearly choked on the sugar every time — and no, the sugar wasn’t coke too.
7. “All That” cast members were recruited from Nickelodeon through intense, nation-wide auditions.
Lisa went through seven callbacks, had to read a scene, prepare a monologue, and answer a series of questions from the producers!
8. A lot of people think of “All That” as the “SNL” for kids, but functionally it was different.
“All That” was taped before it was aired. “SNL” is aired live, and though highly scripted, staffed by seasoned improv comedians.
9. Being an “All That” cast member was not for the faint of heart.
During the course of the show Lisa had to stick cockroaches in her mouth, let tarantulas crawl on her, and lay down in a glass box filled with live frogs. Yikes.
