Watch Outkast Perform “Rosa Parks” on the “All That” Stage
Before Hey Ya smashed the charts, there was Rosa Parks. Outkast, the hip-hop duo composed of Andre “Andre 3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton, emerged in 1992 and rose to commercial success in the late 90s and early 2000s. They performed “Rosa Parks” from their third album “Aquemini” on the “All That” stage in 1999!

Some fun facts about “Rosa Parks”: the song has little to do with the historic figure other than the lyrics “Everybody move to the back of the bus.” Metaphorically, the song is likening Rosa Parks’ act of heroism to Outkast paving the way for a new era of hip hop.
Unfortunately for Outkast, Rosa Parks’ lawyers objected to the obscenities and sued them over an alleged “misappropriation of Parks’ name.” The judge ruled that it was an “expressive work” protected by the first amendment. It would later be understood that the lawsuit had less to due with Rosa Parks herself than the lawyers, who may have pursued it based on their own financial interest.
The song was also nominated for “Best Song by a Rap Duo or Group.” They didn’t win, but won the same award a year later for “Ms. Jackson.”
In the years since, Outkast developed their sound, won a Grammy for Album of the Year, starred in musical film “Idlewild,” went on hiatus, and pursued solo careers. They reconnected in 2014 for their 20th anniversary, after which they performed at 40 festivals worldwide starting with Coachella.
