From Subatomic Particles to Our Sense of Self
Sam Brinson

Is the “I” being referred to in this highly interesting article human consciousness or the sense of self, the ego? I believe those two to be different things. While the former entails an awareness of one’s surroundings, including an awareness of one’s existence, the latter is simply that sense of self which many speculate to be an illusion. Furthermore, while consciousness may be what biologists call an emergent property of the brain, one that emanates from the complex interactions of its components, neurologists believe the ego to be a specific part of the brain: the default mode network. The fact that, when under the effect of psychedelics, blood flow is cut from that region of the brain leads researchers to attribute the feeling of ego dissolution to this precise physical change of the brain. So, ya.
