Fall 2016 — Battle Pass: Path of the Dominator

For the players who like to right click things and get flashing banners

Valve have continued the idea of making the Battle Pass Paths revolved around a milestone rather than a particular hero type. In this occasion, those who can make a lot of physical damage gets the spotlight somewhat.

The prize for this is a very good Razor set, Compact of the Guardian Construct. For me it seems a very cool set to win if you ask me.

Let’s get going.

A Firm Hand

Deal 7500 / 15000 / 22500 or more Physical Damage to Enemy Heroes

Get your Carry and favorite right clicker and start doing damage. Physical Carries can do at least 100~150 damage usually at level 12, counting on the items you usually get. My personal favorite is Phantom Assassin, but any heavy hitter would do as long as the game last more than 15~20 minutes.

Putting that into perspective, hitting heroes for 22500 damage seems very off the charts, but you should ramp up in the damage department with a relatively average game time. Better if there is a tanky hero that you can bring down with no major help.

Just watch out, heavy hitters usually lack HP and magic protection, so have nice regen items (or nice teammates) to stay in the fighting instead of dying first and lose the opportunity to keep dealing more damage. In other words: don’t initiate just because you feel you are gonna win. Unless, of course, you have spells or items to do so.

Black King Bar can be your best friend sometimes.

Quick Pick-me-up

Across multiple victories: Claim the Aegis on your Hero 3 / 6 / 9 times.

There is no other hero who can claim the Aegis so easily than Ursa. It should be your first pick for this. Mind the “Across multiple victories”; you can try in several games until you get your 9 free Aegis.

Classic recommendations for the brainless Ursa: have vision near the Rosh Pit (so buy an Observer Ward when possible), always get in with Smoke of Deceit, remember to have at least Level 3 of Fury Swipes and HP Regen before going in solo, and have detection for invisible heroes.

Other Options: Heavy hitters with good regen items (Morbid Mask derivatives)

Speed and Accuracy

Kill 10 / 15 / 20 creeps in 30 seconds or less.

For this task we are going for those Heroes who can flash-farm. A creep wave spawns every 30 seconds, and while you can kill the near wave, you can get the next incoming wave deep in the lane inside the 30 seconds window. That usually works when the momentum is shifted against your lane too.

Is not confirmed, but neutral creeps should also count, so be ware of stacking the easy and mid camps just for the number rather than the XP and Gold. You could even kill the present wave, kill the easy camp (and stack it) and kill the incoming wave.

With that, heroes who have good AoE will work flawlessly, and those who can rely on a well-timed Battlefury too. This Quest will probably fire in the Mid/Late game, though, so don’t try-hard-it before the 10 minutes.

Recommended Heroes: Shadow Fiend, Templar Assassin, Alchemist, Slark, Necrophos, Puck, Storm Spirit, Luna, Timbersaw, Leshrac, Lina, Sven.
Other Options: Anti-mage, Ember Spirit, Juggernaut, Mirana, Phantom Assassin, Templar Assassin, Drow Ranger, Sniper.

That Special Someone

Kill a single enemy 2 / 3 / 4 times.

As a carry, you should focus on the most fragile hero for this task. There is no too much to think about it if you want to secure 4 kills on that pleb. Plus, this Quest can vary too much depending on the heroes lineup, and how bad they are at doto.

My personal recommendation? Always focus on the most fragile hero.

Free Trade Agreement

Across multiple victories: Deal 1000 / 3000 / 5000 damage to enemy buildings while your team’s buildings are under attack by enemy heroes.

This is a very tricky one because in pubs and lower MMR there is no clear concept of “trading towers”. The best you can do is have good pusher hero and be ready to put pressure on towers. Or hope for a base race. Or hope for good Rat Heroes in your team.

The good part: is across multiple victories, but given its conditions it’s a clear candidate to be fixed soon while you let it to be the last quest on your path.

Valve should fix this to something less occasional and random. It sounds good to lower the damage to 1000 / 2000 / 3000, to focus on Tier 1 towers, and change “under attack by enemy heroes” to just “without backdoor protection”, meaning there are creeps near it. That should also make useful the tiny shield icon in the towers.

Recommended Heroes: Nature’s Prophet, Shadow Shaman, Death Prophet, Terrorblade, Luna, Lone Druid, Pugna, Windranger, Jakiro.

Give You Pause

Get 2 / 4 / 6 Kills or Assists on Heroes after stunning them with Abyssal Blade.

Abyssal Blade, a 6400G item, is usually paired with Carrys who have no reliable lockdown and have an over-the-average attack speed.

We are talking an item for mid-game or late-game, so you shouldn’t rush it. Overwhelm (active spell) has a very short 35s cooldown and you can perfectly land it 6 times in the late game if the stun doesn’t proc — the quest says to “stun” but doesn’t say that it should be done with the active spell or not.

Personally, Valve should fix this to give a clear window of time to the description. 5 seconds should be enough. Overall, to me, this sounds fair:

“Get 3 / 4 / 5 Kills or Assists on Heroes, before 5 seconds, after stunning them with Skull Basher or Abyssal Blade”.

Recommended Heroes: Juggernaut, Anti-Mage, Riki, Alchemist.
Other options: Lycan, Phantom Assassin, Riki, Slark, Ursa.

Ancient Memories

Kill 15 / 30 / 45 Ancient creeps.

For this you will need help, or dominate a creep with Helm of the Dominator and stack them at 0:53 mark. If you like automatic things, you should check these videos for auto-stacking Ancients.

Why you will need stacking? Ancient Creeps packs are made of 3 creeps, but it’s difficult to clear them in the early game, and is also difficult to stack more than 5 packs. To get 45 Ancient Creeps, you will need at least clear 3 times a five-stacked camp. Depending on when you get Helm of the Dominator, you may have to spend 15~20 min doing this to get 45 Ancient Creeps.

The good part is that is not less impactful, as doing so will ramp up your Gold and XP. But the bad part is that you will need help clearing it (somebody will have to tank it) or have Cleave + HP regen items in your inventory if you are going solo, like Vladimir’s Offering or Vanguard.

Just pray nobody steals it, or better, that there is already a support doing the stacking for you.

Recommended Heroes: Sven, Phantom Assassin, Anti-Mage, Alchemist
Other Options: Ursa, Luna, Ember Spirit, Tiny.

On the Clock

Get 20 / 30 / 40 Last Hits before the game timer reaches 10:00

Until the 10:00 minute mark you will have practically 18 Creep Waves to last hit, that is translated in 74 Creeps (including Siege units)… if my math is correct. Add to that Enemy Heroes and the jungle, and you should be covered.

Last hitting expertise is critical for Carries, so if you suck on this, you should get a good jungling Hero and stack mid and easy camps every time you can, as both usually provide a large number of creeps rather than XP and Gold.

Good read is this article on Reddit if you want to see metrics on last hitting difficulty. It’s a little outdated but it can give you an approximation of what Heroes you could aim for this task.

Flash Farmers for Speed and Accuracy also count for this quest.

Recommended Heroes: Phantom Lancer, Faceless Void, Legion Commander, Juggernaut, Sven, Bloodseeker, Templar Assassin, Kunkka, Lifestealer, Ursa, Anti-Mage.

Esprit de Corpse

Across multiple victories: Go on 3 / 6 / 9 Killing Spree kill streak(s).

To get a Killing Spree you have to get 3 kills without dying. For what I can get with that description, it seems that you should aim to kill 9 Heroes in a row.

If it’s not that, that means to get a Killing Spree, die, and then do it again.

Kind of confusing until I get proper confirmation of how this quest work. Even if then, the Hero pool for this particular amendment is extensive.

Double Down

Perform 1 / 2 / 3 Double Kill(s)

Another “un-recommended hero” quest. For this, I cannot say nothing more than be prepared for teamfights, as it should be the case to get more than 1 kill alone. Pretty much luck on this.

My personal recommendation is to pick a good mobility items or heroes that can keep the chase on in the case the enemy decides to retaliate.

Blood Drive

Kill 2 / 4 / 6 enemy Heroes before the game timer reaches 15:00

I would rather pick a Carry with good initiation spells or items to have the initiative, instead of relying on a rotation or my teammates.

The key here is to have a nice TP in the inventory to rotate and have a kill in another lane if you think you have a nice opportunity. The 15:00 minutes mark is very close to the mid-game, and getting 6 kills at that mark can be very difficult if you not seize your window of opportunity.

Recommended Heroes: Sven, Phantom Assassin, Tiny, Slark, Phantom Lancer, Faceless Void, Ember Spirit, Sniper, Mirana, Slardar, Huskar.

Knock-down Affair

Across multiple victories: Destroy 1 / 3 / 5 enemy Tower(s) with your team before the game timer reaches 12 minutes.

Getting 5 enemy Towers means, at the very best, three Tier 1 towers and two Tier 2 towers. To get this, you will have to seize the opportunity to push hard with the creep lane every time you can.

For this I usually recommend Nature’s Prophet, Keeper of the Light, Pugna, Chen, Broodmother, who can push a tower all by themselves using the “one creep distracts the wave behind the tower, the rest hits it” (except Pugna, of course). Before the 12 minutes can be hard for the likes of Death Prophet or Shadow Shaman, as their pushing spells comes at Level 6 and because you should aim for 5 Enemy Towers in the less games possible.

If Nature’s Prophet isn’t your cup of tea, you will have to communicate with your team to have pushing items ready for the siege. Mekansm, Necronomicon, Drums of Endurance, Vladmir’s Offering, Pipe of Insight, and Mäelstrom are good items.

Recommended Heroes: Nature’s Prophet, Pugna, Chen, Broodmother, Keeper of the Light.
Other Options: Beastmaster, Death Prophet, Shadow Shaman.

Leave Them Speechless

Silence enemy Heroes for 15 / 30 / 45 seconds with Orchid Malevolence or Bloodthorn.

Orchid Malevolence silences a target for 5 seconds, so basically it means using it successfully for 9 times. Bloodthorn is the most costly Item in the whole game, so you should pick it only if you reek in gold. It won’t add more seconds to the Soulburn, but the Critical Chance can help to bring down tanky heroes with your team.

I recommend Heroes where Orchid Malevolence is a core Item.

Recommended Heroes: Queen of Pain, Storm Spirit, Clinkz.
Other Options: Windranger, Nature’s Prophet, Bounty Hunter, Viper, Silencer, Outworld Devourer.

The Rising Tide

Across multiple victories: Earn 3000 / 6000 / 9000 Gold for your team.

My recommendation? Kill Ste… I mean, Kill Secure, get all the last hits, bring down the Towers, and be intelligent in the itemization. It says “for your team”, so Bounty Hunter could be a good option if you want to play it that way, but as I understand, it means to get gold in anyway because you are part of the team.

If you are not keen of Bounty Hunter, Towers and Barracks should become your main objective along with Assisting in kills, along with Roshan, as they have a shared bounty. Personally I would last hit them just to be sure.

Redirect Current

Deal 2000 / 4000 / 6000 damage to enemy Towers, and steal 800 / 1600 / 2400 damage from enemies using Static Link.

Let’s do the math. Every Tier 1 Tower has 1300 HP, what makes them 3900 in total. Add to that two Tier 2/3/4 Towers and you have 6500 HP.

While you can come in late to do damage to the towers, you can focus on bring an Aghanim’s Scepter soon so Eye of the Storm can hit buildings too.

Static Link should be used on those enemy Heroes with high physical damage and no escape, but it will work on anything really. It can steal up to 57/115/173/231 Damage for 8 seconds, so you level this up from the beginning.

The Cooldown for Static Link is around 30 seconds, so to use it 20 times we are talking about effective 10 minutes, less or so considering how the game goes. I should recommend spamming it from the very beginning, especially to zone the enemy at early game and to not let them last hit.
