What gets me is just how hung up a certain brand of philosopher can get on their pet idea. It’s not enough to discuss it, it’s not enough to argue it, they have to bring it up every single time, and extend their idea to literally every aspect of the physical universe. So, we end up with someone yelling over and over again about “vortexes”, which have had their definition expanded to include literally everything from how cells differentiate to orbital motion to “love”. There’s also the “electric universe” crowd, utterly convinced that every single aspect of astrophysics can be explained if we just assume that everything beyond the atmosphere of Earth is just electrically charged plasma.
It’s become a big “tell” to me that an idea isn’t worth pursuing if their answer to literally everything is “the ultra quicksand percolates and out bubbles- whatever it was you were asking me about”.
