Always leave a chink in your skin

What I like about

crab
crab (painting by Billy Solitario, http://billysolitario.com, used with permission)

Crabs is that

they walk not all–ways but sideways
use all their legs
take their time
blow bubbles from their eyes
dig their way out of fearsome open spaces into rocks or sand
breathe underwater
and on land
co-ordinate egg laying with the moon
grow a new shell when the old one gets too tight
die when their carapaces crack.

Humans is that

title
human (drawing by leonardo Da Vinci, used without permission)
they walk, run, skip, hop, crawl -
any way, including backwards,
they take my time
blow sea-water droplets from their eyes
love places with a view
breathe in only air and its scents and movements
repair their bones that crack
re-grow their skin continually
live only if their carapaces crack.
