It would play on a much deeper character trait that many of us have buried down there, and that makes it very powerful stuff. Part of the power, imho, is the subtly of it, and that’s so hard to do in a short story. It could probably be just a word or look from someone else, to keep the subtle power. In the stuff I write that I like, I prefer not to make it very obvious, which may mean it gets missed, but if it’s caught, like because really every word is there for a reason, then it makes it better.
