The Best Reusable Water Bottles in the World

Dave Cornthwaite
22 min readJan 9, 2015

The team at Say Yes More is dedicated to discovering and encouraging small lifestyle changes that make a wider impact.

One of the most simple material decisions we can make is how we drink our water. Everyone does it, so this is a game everyone can play.

WHY USE A REFILLABLE, REUSEABLE BOTTLE?
There is too much plastic being used unnecessarily, disposed off incorrectly, then washing into our rivers and oceans.

With endless options for refillable water bottles we have the option to reduce our plastic waste, increase our hydration levels and, let’s face it, up our attractiveness (there’s nothing less sexy than someone drinking from packaged water, it’s lazy and financially silly. Right?!).

WHY NOT BUY WATER FROM THE SHOP OR STORE?
While there is water running through your tap there’s no need to go to the store and buy your daily fluid. If you have health concerns about your water bear in mind that commercial plastic is going to leach chemicals into your drinking water, millions of barrels of oil go into the production of this plastic packaging each year, and there are filter options for refillable bottles to ensure any nasties from your tap are eradicated.

Here are some myths about pre-bottled water

So, with all that in mind, we’re not going to rest until everyone is walking around with a durable, refillable water bottle.

HONESTY DISCLAIMER
Up front, we are not affiliated with any water bottle manufacturers (although, through all of this research, we might become one at some point).

This is not a competition nor do we claim that it’s a comprehensive survey, and although we have featured most of the popular models available, we’ve just called it ‘The Best Reusable Water Bottles in the World’ because it sounds way better than ‘Some of Today’s Water Bottles’.

So now you know we’re honest, let’s continue.

THIS IS AN ORGANIC FEATURE
If you have more suggestions for us or if we come across a bottle not yet featured, we’ll update this feature as time goes on. We’ve read comments on other similar blogs where people are mortally offended if their favourite bottle hasn’t been included or, even worse, didn’t get a good rating. These are all good things! See how people get attached to their bottles?!

WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR
So, to the criteria. There are so many choices out there and we weren’t looking at any outstanding factors. We’re on the hunt for the best bottle for day-to-day use ourselves; in the office, at home and on the move.

We wanted a refillable bottle that wouldn’t leach out harmful chemicals or quietly leak all over our laptop when upended in a bag.

If it looked nice in hand or hanging out in the side pocket of a rucksack, great.

A mouth so wide that we dribbled with every sip was looked upon sternly, even as we nodded with appreciation at its ability to receive an ice cube.

We’re not claiming to have put each one of these bottles through years of testing, rather, we’ve used each one solidly for a minimum of three days: at home, in a backpack, on the train (or plane) and out on the bike.

VIDEO
Finally, to give you more of a 3D feel for each bottle than a 2D blog post can offer, we’ve made a little 15-second stop motion film on Instagram for most of our bottles. Enjoy!

When it comes down to it, there isn’t much between these bottles. There’s no right or wrong choice, but your lifestyle might suit one better than the other. We hope this feature helps you decide the best fit for you.

METALLIC BOTTLES

Wide Mouth by SIGG
Price: £18.12 / $28.99

This bottle covers all bases. The wide mouth makes filling and adding ice cubes easy and the upper mouth offers simple drinking. Yes, the extra threads mean more chance for damage & leakage but the Wide Mouth is solidly built and passed our drip-test without a dribble.

The classic Swiss original design is complimented with an easy-grip matt finish, and the 1L capacity means you’ll be covered all day long. If we have to find something wrong, we didn’t always managed to hit the threads first time when screwing on the wide mouth cap. All in all though, this is a fine bottle.

The Reflect by Klean Kanteen
Price: £25.95 / $32.95

As good looking stainless steel bottles go, The Reflect would almost certainly be one of prettiest on the street, depending on the street. I felt slight stress at even touching the mirrored surface without the cleanest of hands, and spent some time gently wiping away the marks I’d made on it.

The bamboo-filled screw top lid adds to the aesthetic and I realised on a train that I was genuinely sipping from a head-turner. Like all stainless steel bottles, the Reflect is prone to denting if dropped, but if you’re like me you’ll think this just adds character, even if that first blemish does feel like you’ve just broken up from your first love.

One con is that the mouth is quite wide, so don’t tip the bottle up too fast otherwise you’ll get wet!

20oz stainless steel bottle by Earthlust
Price: £11.26 / $18.00

We really like Earthlust’s attitude to life, and their fine looking bottles echo their values and style. Environmentally friendly and made from recycled, BPA-free stainless steel, each bottle features a subtle, earthy (are you surprised?) design that adds personality to each sip.

Earthlust supply bottles of various sizes but we went for the 20oz which offered a good balance between carrying weight and drinking capacity. The 1.25”mouth is great for drinking from and we became quite attached to the friendly Rhino on our sample bottle. If you wanted to give someone a water bottle as a present, you could do a lot worse than an Earthlust.

Traveller Touch 600ml by SIGG
Price: £14.37 / $22.99

One of the classic models from established bottle brand, Sigg, the 600ml Traveller Touch is a stocky little pal to take out and about for a short trip, commute or hike. The mouth is great for sipping and the matt black finish both looks badass and assists with grip. But beware, if like us you’re used to carrying a slightly larger bottle take care to ensure that your Touch Traveller is safely slipped into your backpack pocket. We didn’t and little Sigg crashed down some steps at the train station on our first voyage together. Sure, there were scars, but the lid remained undamaged and the container wasn’t compromised. We like this one, even when beaten up.

Classic 800ml with loop cap by Klean Kanteen
Price: £15.95 / $25.51

This is one of the classics. The 800ml has the capacity to avoid the need for a refill every ten minutes, without being a hulk that tests the strength of your wrist or is a struggle to slip into your backpack. A clean, rounded design with no distinct corners makes for easy cleaning and a wide 1.75” mouth allows entry for your average ice cube, without needing a bib to drink from.

Available in multiple colours (we opted for Blue Planet, just because we like the colour blue), this is a long-lasting, safe choice to keep you company for the next few years, and it comes with a lifetime warranty for peace of mind.

HARD PLASTIC BOTTLES

Long-lasting BPA-free plastic bottles are a great option for the sporty and adventurous among us. Drinking on the move is made just a little easier with a fold-back cap that is always attached to the bottle (and therefore doesn’t get dropped or roll away), and unlike any other material plastic is less prone to dents, scratches and shattering.

Nava by KOR
Price: £14.99 / $23.97

The KOR Nava is a nice looking, easy-to-open bottle with a coconut shell filter (which, we’re reliably told, exceeds the NSF 42 standards for chlorine taste and odor removal). We do like a bottle that means you can open and drink using just one hand, although it is remarkably easy to accidentally pop the KOR Nava’s cap open, which would make us think twice about leaving it sloshing around in a bag.

The straw is easy enough to use and allows a good flow once you’ve gotten over the baby’s bottle-like approach to suckling on your daily fluid, and yes, the filter does make tap water taste pretty dreamy.

Two things to note: don’t fill the water right up to the brim because the chunky filter will displace some water when screwing on the lid, and the straw doesn’t quite reach the bottom of the bottle, which is garglingly frustrating.

All said and done though, the Nava is a decent bottle, and KOR send a portion of all sales to non-profits working on water-related projects worldwide, through their Thirst for Giving™ program.

On The Fly by Nalgene
Price: £9.99/ $12.99

When Nalgene’s faithful customer base asked for a hard plastic bottle that could be opened with one hand and could fit into a bike’s water bottle cage, they developed the On The Go. It was a success, but it wasn’t leakproof.

On The Fly was the next iteration. A tough bottle with an easy, secure cap that doesn’t make the water taste funny. Cards on the table, I’ve carried an On The Fly with me for two years. Admittedly, my cleaning routine was infrequent and I didn’t change the spongy seal that keeps the water in, so I felt it was time for a new bottle. Having tested out several different models these last few weeks, I haven’t found anything that’s head and shoulders above the OTF.

It’s the easiest bottle to drink from on the list, withstands dropping easily and has a simple, effective cap. Regardless of how the other bottles in this feature perform, the OTF is a safe bet.

Intak Hydration Bottle by Thermos
Price: £6.91/ $10.99

A comfortable, ribbed, ergonomic design make the Intak probably the easiest to carry bottle in our list, and a small carrying ring attached to the lid adds finger-swinging potential to the list.

Speaking of the lid, it doesn’t feel like the strongest build, with a very thin plastic feel, and a few too many working parts to give confidence for a long life. But that remains to be seen. Without doubt, though, it’s an easy bottle to use. You can easily open with one hand by pressing a thumb against the button and flicking the cap back, and water flows freely without a straw to suck on. The Intak’s metal locksafe clip ensures that drippage is not something you’re going to get from this bottle.

An added gimmick is a rotating meter, letting you notch up how many bottle-fills you’ve had today, which is a nice idea but didn’t seem to work on our sample. After a minute-long wrestle trying to get the damn thing to turn I gave up. Not through disinterest, just concern that the lid might break under duress.

Aveo by Aladdin
Price:
£5.00 / $7.99

The dinky, perfectly formed Aveo is the Kylie Minogue of water bottles. Looks superb, could fit in a lunchbox and you generally can’t help but love it (her).

Anyway, it’s late on a Friday and there’s only so many Kylie similes at arm’s reach. Another smaller bottle for a commute or short trip, it’s definitely one of the most feminine models we’ve tried but it is superbly made, totally leakproof, a gorgeously smooth screw top and a thoughtful fabric loop handle. We like this one. Nice work, Aladdin.

Groove by Camelbak
Price: £22.19 / $35.49

Traditionally, Camelback have always been one of the main players on the Triton plastic scene. The Groove is one of their most popular current models and with good reason. It’s as solid as any other bottle on the list, has a filter that can clean an equivalent volume of water to 375 disposable bottles, and the straw/mouthpiece is about as simple and easy to use as can be.

The cap has a moulded plastic handle for easy carrying/ carabiner’ing to a bag, and if it wasn’t for the fact that the Groove dribbles when left upside down it would hands down be our stand-out bottle. As it is, as long as you keep it the right way up and don’t chuck it in a handbag, you can’t go wrong with this.

Narrow mouth by Nalgene
Price: £5.66 / $9.00

Another Nalgene bottle, this one is famed alongside its wide mouth sibling for being practically bombproof (please don’t take this literally). At 500ml, this is another short trip or commuter-friendly bottle and the screw-on cap won’t go walkabout thanks to the loop lead. Simple, good at what it does, and small enough for a Chihuahua to use as a carry pack.

Wide mouth by Nalgene
Price:
£5.66 / $9.00

As portability and ease of day-to-day use goes, the wide mouth is probably not the best choice due to its stocky shape and high capacity.

But where it comes into its own is when adventure comes a calling. Need a back up water container as you venture into the hills, and a bottle that can double up as a pot for food storage? Call Wide Mouth. Just as indestructible as the Nalgene narrow mouth, this canteen goes one better because you can exchange the screw top for a Nalgene On The Fly cap should you feel suitably pumped up to use it as your general refillable.

If, say, we were bored and wanted to throw all the bottles in this test out of the top floor window onto concrete below, my money would be on this one to survive.

SOFT, SQUEEZY PLASTIC BOTTLES

Softer bottles are often lighter thanks to their thinner, more malleable plastic construction. Often they’re more bulbous than their Triton or Eastman Plastic cousins, but don’t mistake the squeeziness for vulnerability. These bottles can hold their own.

Eau Good by Black Blum
Price: £14.95 / $23.88

Now, this is different. It’s not often you get to squeeze a hefty stick of charcoal into your new water bottle, but that’s exactly what sets the Eau Good apart from the competition. It even has a little notch in the plastic that helps you lock the filter into place.

And yes, the bintochan active charcoal is a filter, as the Black Blum website tells us: It reduces chlorine, mineralises the water and balances the pH. The stick lasts for 6 months and can be ‘recharged’ by boiling, and later recycled in your BBQ (well, that’s how we’d do it).

And you know what, tap water definitely tastes really good after sitting for a few hours in the Eau Good. For us, this is more of a bottle for the home, partly because it does the water good to sit for a while, partly because while the cork cap is watertight, it takes a couple more seconds than you’d like to open it up.

For hydration, novelty and interest value, not to mention for ‘cutest water bottle name’ reasons, this would make a very cool present.

Bobble Sport by Water Bobble
Price: £7.51 / $11.99

Designed with easy grip for hydration during Sport, the Bobble comes with a carbon filter designed to remove chlorine from your municipal tap. A little squeeze to encourage flow helps you get the most of the pop-up sports cap, and all in all this is a perfectly respectable water bottle, except for the secondary cap ‘hat’, which requires some patient finger work to get off.

Our recommendation: if you’re not burying your Bobble in a bag, just leave the secondary cap off altogether.

Water-To-Go

You might feel this is overkill for a daily-use water bottle, but better safe than sorry. The Water-To-Go filtration system was developed by NASA (yes, NASA) and has been proven to remove 99% of microbiological contaminants in your water.

Basically, whether you’re worried about any nasty stuff that might be lurking in your street’s water pipes or you’re on an expedition and couldn’t be further from a tap, this is the bottle for you.

It has an easy sip cap and, remember how we said about throwing all these bottles out of the top floor window? I’d worry more for the ground below when it comes to this tough little monkey.

GLASS BOTTLES

Much heavier than all other materials, glass is still an option because it’s less likely to leach harmful substances, keeping your water tasting fresh and crisp. Often glass bottles come with nylon or neoprene sleeves to add an extra layer of protection against an unexpected drop.

Glass Water Bottle with Black Nylon Sleeve by Miu Color
Price: £10.62 / $16.99

Slim, stylish and a pleasure to be around. The glass construction makes the Miu Color arguably too heavy to compete against other bottles for a place in your travel bag, but it does come with a snug nylon sleeve which offers a degree of protection, although the sleeve’s main use is to keep your hand’s burn-free when the included tea strainer is being put to use. Yep, this bottle is temperature flexible, which basically means it works with both hot and cold water.

We didn’t want to risk it in the drop test, but really enjoyed having it at home and in the office. There’s just something special about drinking from a glass bottle, and the cap smoothly screws on first time, every time.

The Miu also comes with a specially made cleaning sponge and handle, and you can unscrew both the lid and bottle base, making this by far the easiest bottle to clean in our selection.

Neo by Flaska
Price:
£20.94 / $33.50

Flaska’s Neo bottle is no ordinary glass. Through some kind of magical trickery, they claim to have found a way to incorporate technology into the bottle that has a structural effect on the water within, meaning it ’acts’ more like spring water.

I’ll be honest, I couldn’t quite tell the difference, but as with most glass bottles the taste was very pleasant, and if anything I felt like I was holding a special object. But maybe that’s just what they wanted me to think.

Flaska seem to be a very nice little company who genuinely seem keen to make a difference, even with their psychosomatic marketing http://www.flaska.eu/water-structuring-with-flaska that is too intelligent for me to comprehend.

Sleeves come in multiple colour options and can also be custom printed.

* Some of the brands we featured offer multiple choice for caps, and while a screw top or loop cap isn’t ideal for cycling or on-the-move sports (we’d prefer a straw design for this) it’s worth investigating to see whether a straw cap is available if you like the sound of a particular bottle.

** If you think a different type of bottle should be featured here, let us know in the comments below and we’ll get on it.
