The iPhone 8 64 GB Memory Fiasco…

So here I am, looking to hit the button on the iPhone 8 and upgrade my iPhone 7 128GB (80GB used).

The X is not for me. The UX looks clunky with swipes from the corners needing two hands meaning it’s really an 8+ in sheeps clothing. FaceID looks slow and upward swipes look ridiculously flamboyant for everyday use. I like to early adopt but this feels a year early. IMHO.

And the price. Oh, the price. 1000 GBP for a 64GB phone. 64GB? Really?

Final nail — Animoji? I’d love to have been in that meeting. It was likely chaired by the same genius that developed “touch messaging” for the AppleWatch. What a revolution that was. Like that it will be roundly ignored after the first few “chuckles” with an animated 💩 . I sometimes wonder if Apple devices nowadays are purely designed for white middle aged Californians with a tendency for Steve Job’isms on stage.

So back to the 8. I don't like the +. It’s like walking around with a piece of toast. Done it, tried it, sold it (in the 6+ guise). So. The 8. Standard size.

What does it have?

A super fast processor that I don't need. Yet.
More or less the same camera. Still rubbish in low light.
More or less the same screen with some sort of new colour guff.
A glass back. That I like.
Wireless charging. That I like.

So why upgrade? Well. It’s basically the evolution to the perfect 6. Wireless, all-ish glass like the 4 (best design after the 3GS yet) and the price swap between my 7 on eBay and the 8 direct from Apple (SIM free) is very palatable.

And yet. I don’t and, more specifically, can't have one. Apple have created no viable upgrade path for me. Why? Well, with a 128GB 7 and 80GB used I have two choices. Slim down my memory use to 64, not impossible but likley to hit stumbling blocks daily, or pay another 150 quid and get the 256 version.

So. It’s now 850 for the phone, not 700, and it’s now only 150 away from the X. Classic marketing grade walk and upsell path with a nice factor of FOMO installed for the Apple fanboyz.

So get the X for only another 150? Well, as per my “a year to early for the UX comments” and takedown of Animoji 💩 it’s just not on my radar.

Grade walk again from the 8 256 to a X 64? Not on your nelly. Theoretically that walks you up one last time to the X 256 and thats now 1150 of her majesty's British pounds. So I’ve suddenly gone from 700 to 1150 in a flash. 450 quid because they are missing 64GB of memory on the base 8. 🙄

I guess the Steve Jobs reality distortion field has worked its magic on reviewers, advocates and influencers — not a single comment on the jump from 64 to 256 or the disparity between the 7 and the 8 on memory. Well done Apple.

I will keep my 7, 🤞 for a memory bump at WWDC.
