I work by myself every day and here’s how I address the loneliness issue: phone calls. Lots of earbuds-in-ears-while-walking catch up calls with family, groomsmen, friends from school, and friends from places I’ve lived.

I love it. Taking a walk gets me on my feet and reinvigorates the blood flowing through my brain to work. Checking in with friends and family reminds me I’m not alone and that they genuinely care for me and I for them — something I don’t really feel sitting at the community table in Starbucks (where I always work).

Striking up conversations is hit-or-miss at a place like Starbucks, I’ve found. I make it a point to go to meetups to meet local hustlers. I move to a new city every three months so meetups and churches are critical to find community.

Hope you’re doing well, Declan, thanks for the post and transparency.
