Are You Against Gay Marriage Because: The Bible?
Scott Bateman

This is crazy timing! My church just did a sermon on Is Homosexuality Condemned in the Bible?

While Jesus didn’t explicitly mention homosexuality by name, he did reference it by lumping it in with other porneia — sins involving sexual immorality.

Jesus didn’t disprove or disarm the OT, he fulfilled it. Big difference.

Also, if you are only listening to the NT, then won’t you listen to the apostle Paul? I’m pretty sure he called homosexuality “immoral” just as he called a number of other sins immoral.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.
They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

See, here’s my problem with people who get all up in arms about judging homosexuality: homosexuality is no different then the other things in life that do not satisfy us. Money does not satisfy us. Fame does not satisfy us. Success. Looks. Intellect. Family. These things will ALL not satisfy us because we are ALL selfish humans. I’m straight and I struggle with lust. I could be gay and struggle with lust. WE BOTH NEED GRACE.

God is the only eternal Being who can satisfy us. Nothing that has to do with selfishness, pride, earthly pleasure, will leave us satisfied. The joy that God the Father gives us satisfies me because He is limitless, mysterious, and different from anything else I know.

So am I against gay marriage because of the bible?

Or, asked another way:

Am I against myself because of the bible?

Yes to both (and do not quote me unless you quote this whole sentence), because I believe God has given us the Bible to tell us he loves us while we are still sinners — hetero, homo, whatever — it doesn’t matter. I am just as messed up as the next hetero or homo, probably more. But God has a better plan for every one of us… it’s freedom from sin. And joy in just Jesus. This is the only way to be deeply satisfied.
