Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement #001

First, let me thank Prime Minister Thomas McCord for the appointment of Minister of Foreign Affairs — I greatly appreciate and honor the trust that he has placed in me to make sure that our country is back on it’s feet again internationally.

There are three legs to the stool of Canadian Foreign Policy: Defense, Diplomacy, and Development. Here at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we are responsible for two of those legs. And we will make clear, as we go forward, that diplomacy and development are essential tools in achieving the long-term objectives of Canada. And I will do all that I can, working with you, to make it abundantly clear that robust diplomacy and effective development are the best long-term tools for securing Canada’s future.
