California Legislature Picks on UC Again

Yesterday the California Legislature authorized another audit of the University of California. The expressed reason: concern over how UC President Janet Napolitano is spending $600+ million per year.

Ironically, $600 million is the annual cost of just the latest raise that same legislature recently granted California’s prison guards, their third raise in the six years. The result: the state will spend $5 billion per year on salaries for the 55,000 employees of the Corrections Department, plus another $1 billion for retirement and other benefits.

In comparison, the state provides UC with $3.5 billion. UC serves 238,000 students.
