This is the the TRUE story of a man, his invention and us. This is a REAL story. It’s not just about a beautiful dream, nor is it only about our fondest hopes and dearest wishes for ourselves, our families and friends to somehow SAFEly come out of our present authoritarian nightmare to live freely, securely and privately again. Nor is this story like a cynical advertisement designed to get you to buy something you don’t need.

On second thought, I honestly believe you ACTUALLY do need to buy what I’m saying but that’s for you to decide and it’s FREE for the taking…

…I hope you freely consider the challenge I give to you at the end of the story.

Yes, this story is about a REAL man, his REAL invention and us…REALLY.

This man’s invention, this thing that this man created ACTUALLY exists in the REAL world today. It’s brand new and much more than just a world-changing idea to restore our liberties and natural rights. Oh, don’t get me wrong; it’s certainly all of that and more because it’s already a FACT of life. Its existence is NOW causing some of us already to reconsider what we think is possible with the internet and what we think we know about digital REALITY and what we think we will be able to do with our digital lives but that’s not all. This man’s invention will profoundly affect our REAL lives too…

…REALLY.

The thing, this invention IS the SAFE Network.

The SAFE Network now belongs to all of us too.

But that’s a whole ‘nother’ story that you might not yet understand. I might recommend that you read, if you haven’t, that story told in the very first blog post of The SAFE Network Blog.

By the way, The SAFE Network which is already ours ACTUALLY comes to us FREE of charge. It’s a gift from the man who invented it. He’s already given it away to us and everyone else in the world. Isn’t that something?

It gets better. We can actually earn money by using his invention, the SAFE Network that he’s given away to us for free. But again, that’s another story I’ve told in one or more of my previous blog posts. You might go back, find and read one or two of those, if you don’t know what I’m talking about yet.

What is the SAFE Network, REALLY?

The SAFE Network IS a completely undiscovered-unpredictable universe of innovation, freedom, privacy and security.

Its power, when unleashed upon the planet will be like nothing we’ve ever digitally experienced before.

Of course, there will be an initial period of time required for the technology to spread across the planet. This will likely happen quite readily once the experience of being on the SAFE Network is felt by enough people that word-of-mouth takes over, somewhat like when you see a great movie, you’ll quite naturally tell your friends.

Once the SAFE Network becomes robust and ubiquitous, EVERYTHING will change. Its promise, not a wish or hope, but a REAL promise inherent in this breakthrough technology is that it will help to bring about a TRUE societal transformation that will then lend itself effectively to solving the complex problems of civilization.

The SAFE Network and the people who use it will naturalistically, creatively and efficiently work together in ways that autonomously erodes authoritarian structures and simultaneously replaces these with liberty-promoting self-governing open value networks (OVNs). These OVNs will naturalistically self-aggregate into wise communities that will not only be free, they’ll be secure and private also.

So, the ACTUAL impact of the SAFE Network affects not just our digital cryptospace but the REAL world too.

Why will it do that? Because it can. Because the SAFE Network actually possesses the attributes and the power to profoundly affect things this way. And with the progressive model of OVNs driven by intelligent consensus, effective solutions to difficult problems can be derived via the killers apps those communities create. It only takes people motivated by self-interest to take on whatever they want to take on and voila! Something very good can get done.

Why will it work? Because the design is built for interdependent workability and this naturalistic feature ACTUALLY functions for the very purpose of allowing civilization’s progress to get “unstuck” without depending on the impossible: everyone seeing or believing things the same way. Because of this, the SAFE Network will get things moving again by giving us a REAL alternative to authoritarianism and sectarianism in all its strong and weak forms.

Supporting The SAFE Network to become this ACTUAL transformative dynamo is my central motivation for telling you this story and then issuing my challenge to you at the end of the article.

What are the components of the SAFE Network?

The SAFE Network includes its underlying source code that’s written in the C++ computer language (but compatible through its application programming interface {API} with other languages like C# and Java), the humans who connect to it, adopt it, communicate and work with it (you, me and all our liberty-loving friends), as well as the myriad of software applications (yet-to-be written and deployed) that will “inhabit” the infinitude of this new REALITY, especially those apps that operationalize the coming free and unfettered SafeCoin economy which, IN FACT, will be established in this new cryptospace upon the SAFE Network. It will also include SafeCoin and the programming that creates the SafeCoins including digital wallets and the SafeCoin transfer protocols.

Important Note: I DO NOT CALL the SAFE Network by certain shortened versions of its two-word expression. I’ve quite recently run across this not-well-thought-through attempt at inventing a shorter moniker. I DO NOT use: SafeNet or SAFEnet or some variation of this. Referring to the SAFE Network like this is a VERY BAD IDEA because of the 30-year old, very successful US-based corporation that goes by the name of SafeNet with a very long public reputation known by many people all over the world. If people continue to speak of the SAFE Network by using one of these shortened versions, they will only confuse others or inevitably make others think that the SAFE Network is somehow affiliated with the company called SafeNet which it is NOT and MaidSafe is definitely NOT affiliated with SafeNet.

Back to the story…

Our challenge right now really comes down to this: most folks don’t have a clue about the SAFE Network yet. And why should they? It’s a very, very new thing that is only NOW being properly tested in its current extremely important pre-deployment phase of testnets. After the testnets are finished (there are three of them and the MaidSafe team are NOW finishing testnet one), core developers intend to launch the beta version of the SAFE Network. The beta launch itself will also be a strictly limited deployment. Therefore, I am reasonably confident in this limited and fairly vague prediction:

SAFE Network 1.0 (not the beta that’s coming soon but the first public version afterwards) will NOT deploy before sometime in 2015, at the earliest.

That is NOT a fact; it’s a speculation but it helps us to understand where we REALLY are at present. But, that’s not what this story is about.

This story is about a man, his invention the SAFE Network and us.

Don’t forget the ‘us’ part. We are an important part of this story too.

As I just said, not too many of us know about the SAFE Network yet. This problem is further challenged by the FACT that although quite REAL, it’s still nothing more and nothing less than bits and bytes of C++ computer source code fashioned into an original, fast, powerful and efficient protocol that eliminates the need for other antiquated, inefficient protocols of the old insecure public internet that’s been with us since day 1 with all sorts of patches and networking work-arounds to deal with capacity and traffic problems.

I’ve been using a lot of UPPER CASE letters to give you reason to pause and to think about this:

The SAFE Network REALLY exists right NOW and will soon be launched in its beta version. When it sets full sail (likely in 2015), it WILL change EVERYTHING.

Everything? Yes, everything.

Oh, that reminds me…

Please, by all means, do think for yourself while you’re reading this. Use your own judgment to evaluate what I’m writing. On a personal note, it’s fundamentally important to me that people think for themselves. One of the basic problems of our present age is that too many people have lost this basic capacity for intelligent thinking or maybe it’s not as bad as I make it sound and it’s merely laziness that can be more easily un-learned. I hope it is the latter but either way, the current situation seems to present real fundamental challenges to adoption of great ideas like the SAFE Network.

On a much brighter note, if you will think for yourself as you read this article, and take your time considering it, mull it over and accept the challenge I give you at the end, I believe with all my freedom-loving heart, you’ll open up a REAL door to fundamentally changing the ACTUAL quality of your life.

No kidding.

This is why I’m writing this. I want to tell you something that will shift everything for you…as in, no sh#t. So, please pay attention; I believe in your ability to get your head around what I’m about to tell you. I’m not talking down to you but REALLY, this will be difficult or impossible if you don’t ACTUALLY engage with me on this. But it won’t be that hard if you’ll lend me your ear and let your mind open up to imagined-but-not-yet-realized possibilities that are now finally in reach both techno- and sociologically.

Civilization is on the verge of re-inventing itself and this FACT has a lot to do with the invention in this story.

Okay, like I said, this is a story. The time has come to go on a journey with me into another cognitive realm that’s also REAL, we’ll take this little trip together and I’m hoping that you’ll really enjoy the ride! But, it’s time to decide this for yourself. So, please do that now before going on.

Did you do it? Did you decide to come along? I guess the answer is ‘yes’ because you seem to still be reading.

I’m talking about going with me in your imagination and engaging your brain to do something that the folks at Disney do all the time: they imagineer and they create brand new worlds for people to ‘step into.’

So, as you read the rest of this article, I ask you to begin to ACTUALLY think like a Disney imagineer and ALLOW yourself the freedom to think outside conventional boxes and to imagine that the things I’ll be discussing with you a little later in the story have ALREADY happened: that we live in a near-future time when our civilization has ALREADY been re-invented.

I’m going to ask you to ‘step into’ that future with me NOW in your mind or if you prefer, imagine you were getting into a virtual reality ride in Disneyworld such as a 2014 version of Tomorrowland.

Now, what I just said in that last paragraph is REALLY important because we’re going to meet a man who basically did what I’m asking you to do as you continue reading.

His name is David Irvine. David is a computer engineer from Scotland and if you know anything about the Scots, they’re often fiercely independent (Think: William Wallace; Braveheart). Now, I don’t know David that well yet but I’ve been reading his stuff and watching his videos, hanging out with him and colleagues via Google+ and listening to his presentations for awhile now. He and I have communicated together here and there but not as much as we may at some point; he’s very busy now getting the SAFE Network ready for its beta launch, as you can imagine.

Only earlier this year in 2014 did the light bulb come on for me about David. When it did, it profoundly and positively changed the direction of my life, opening a door to this entirely new undiscovered universe that the SAFE Network is NOW making REAL for me personally already. That’s not an overstatement. It’s a sociological FACT about what it means to be introduced to the REALITY and the POTENTIAL of such a world-changing technological development.

So, in a way this story is about two Davids. David Irvine and David Lasoff. And, while you’re reading this, you can decide whenever it suits you to imagine what it would be like to be fiercely independent David Irvine, a man who has been thinking outside the box and thinking about the future for a very long time. He’s the main character of this story.

However, David Lasoff is just some ordinary guy who happened to learn about David Irvine and what he’s been up to these last 8 years. As far as this story goes, he’s just a minor character who ends up being some sort of a supporting bloke. But, what makes his presence important to the story is one simple but powerful idea:

If it’s TRUE (and it is) that David Lasoff’s life has been profoundly and positively impacted by discovering who this ‘mad’ Scot, David Irvine REALLY is and what he’s about, then this same wonderful thing can happen for you too! The quality of your life can shift profoundly from understanding something about the real potential of David’s invention, The SAFE Network!

So, remember to keep your imagineer’s hat on the whole time while reading the rest of this article. Remember to step into the future with me. We are just setting the stage for the story and it requires YOU, the reader to really do your part for this thing to work out well and for this story to have its desired positive impact on your life.

One last thing before we go on…

What I do know about David Irvine is not very much. However, I am absolutely sure that the last thing he would want is for him to be raised up into being some kind of a cult hero. He hates attention and isn’t interested in applause. None of that kind of ego-centric stuff motivates him at all. He’s not a saint nor some kind of a selfless altruist either, I’m pretty sure. He’s simply a very intelligent, individualistic, liberty-loving , free-thinking computer-engineering mad Scot! He’s not overly concerned about people’s opinions of him but all the same, he’s a decent friendly sort of chap who is easy to be around. He’s all for spreading around the praise and he believes that its his team that deserve most of the credit. Actually, they do deserve a lot of the credit, come to think of it.

So, why did I say all that in the last paragraph? I’m trying to tell you that this TRUE story, about one man, David Irvine is being told in this way to make it easier to tell and to understand. Yes, it’s a TRUE story but it’s a bit over-simplified.

I’m leaving out a lot of details and especially, I’m not including the other important people who helped David along the way. These people that I’m intentionally leaving out of the story are REALLY personified in the story’s main character, David Irvine. These people are the men and women of MaidSafe. So if you could, please do David Irvine a BIG favor: don’t idolize the man. It would be doing him no service. If you want to respect him, that’s great. I do. But, I also realize that David never could have done what he’s done without a lot of good help from his friends at MaidSafe.

So, let’s get going with the story…sorry it’s taken so long:

Once upon a time in a galaxy that you’re all too familiar with, there lived this mad Scot, named David Irvine. David was this computer engineer who grew tired of the same ol’ crappy internet with all its malware, spyware, viruses and slow speeds. He was sick of how long it took for popular web pages to generate. He simply hated how the same ol’ crappy internet was designed. And, he knew he wanted to re-design it from the ground up.

So, that’s what he did. He re-designed it. He decided that for things to move forward in the world, we needed a much better internet that gave people their privacy back and that was secure where malware and viruses couldn’t hurt our digital lives anymore. Not only this, but with a private and secure internet, people would be free from authoritarian systems for once, and civilization itself would begin to develop in a healthy way…finally.

He had a big vision.

And so, he got to work. He worked and worked and worked. In fact, that’s about all David has done for the past eight years. He and his team have worked day and night and they continue to lose lots of sleep right now testing the SAFE Network and getting it ready for the beta launch later this year. Actually, their work effort is truly heroic.

Imagineer with me NOW that you can see just what I see about how dedicated they are and how much time and effort is going into the successful soon-to-launch SAFE Network…(story to be continued in a few minutes)

Now like I said, David and MaidSafe are the main characters in this story and if you’ll just remember that, I have to tell you just a little about the other David, the minor character in this story:

me.

Like David Irvine, I don’t really like a lot of attention and I’m not in this for the fame. It’s just not my thing. But, in order to tell the story and for us to imagineer the future of the SAFE Network together (Remember: that’s where this story is leading), I have to tell you about me, the minor character in this tale.

I’m an avid reader. I like to learn. I like to figure things out. I like Sudoku puzzles and politics. I like to see how the pieces of things fit together. I have been to war and know something of the ugliness of authoritarianism. I would call myself a peaceful man with strong libertarian leanings. I believe in freedom and privacy. What I do with my life is my business and if I share my life with you, I want to do it on my own terms without any other third party’s interference or force upon me.

I’ve been looking for the opt-out/opt-in option for a long time. Where’s the alternative to being enslaved by the authoritarian brutes and thugs? When is another choice going to show up?

Well, it did. It finally did.

After more than 30 years of looking (I’m 55 now), I found what I have finally found what I was searching for along every path I walked on, whether that was in America, Europe, Hawaii, Thailand, Singapore, the UAE, Kuwait, Iraq and now Israel. I’ve looked down every alley way and byway, every nook and cranny until I found this:

The SAFE Network.

I immediately began to see all its possibilities for freedom, security and privacy. I contacted Nick Lambert, COO of MaidSafe and David Irvine too. We started communicating. I started writing this blog. I met Chadrick Mahaffey and found out I could do more than just sing the praises of the SAFE Network, I could BECOME the SAFE Network.

Let me repeat that:

I found out that I could BECOME the SAFE Network (the human half).

I found out that even though I was just one man, I could completely change the world. Not because I’m great, but because a great man, David Irvine made that possible for ordinary me.

When David Irvine and MaidSafe made a decision to give the SAFE Network away to average and ordinary me, they gave me a tool or lever to do the heretofore not-yet-imagineered thing:

I could change the world by adopting the SAFE Network as my own. I could be free. I could have my privacy back. I could be secure again and not worry about who was spying on me or nosing around in my personal information without my consent. I could innovate in an entirely new universe with new friends and new possibilities. I could rebel against authoritarian regimes and encourage others to join the 99% Revolution. I could create with a wise crowd new open-value networks (OVNs) that would come to earn SafeCoin providing great services and products that users of the SAFE Network would want. I could also earn my fair share of SafeCoin by adding value to the OVNs that I would join.

The above paragraph is an example of Imagineering. Imagineering takes place with thinking that involves the word ‘could.’

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t idolize David Irvine. I wouldn’t do him the disservice. I simply appreciate the great thing that he’s done by giving the SAFE Network to me. One day, history books will remember who David Irvine was and what he did to change the world by imagineering that he could. They will remember him like they remember other extraordinary men like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs. Men who thought outside the conventional box of wisdom and knowledge to create brand new possibilities and realities for the rest of us.

Now stay with me, there’s a cool story here. I’m kinda telling it but there’s a lot more to tell so just bear with me.

So, listen…

I used to write screenplays and helped out other writers, directors and producers in Hollywood with their film projects. What I’m trying to convey and I hope this comes across powerfully (so, think about this):

A minor character in ANY story can make a BIG contribution to how the story goes, how the story turns and how the story ends or begins again...

David Lasoff is just one man. In this story, as a minor character, he personifies the countless other minor characters who run into or who will yet run into David Irvine and his invention, the SAFE Network.

So now, let’s pick up where we left off:

One day not too long ago, maybe only a few month ago, David Lasoff was having quite a day. He wasn’t feeling all that jazzed. He wasn’t sure what that thing was that was going on inside him, that angst about his life and direction. He was just turning 55. He was happily married, in love with his wife and his community and country. He’s an otherwise content man directing an English language department at a university in Jerusalem. He’s got it made in so many ways, it’s not funny! And, he realizes his good fortune or blessing, depending upon your point of view about such things. What’s this funk all about? He thinks to himself.

He knows something is missing in his life…he’s not sure what it is…

…then he stumbles onto this video:

And, this changes EVERYTHING.

He gets it. This is the missing ingredient in the otherwise perfectly fine life that he leads. He’s not a perfect guy, it’s just that life has been kind to him. He realizes he needs to do something about this.

Now, this is the hard part of the story…I have this difficult job here of trying to get you to understand that…

…I am you or you are me.

You see, the only reason I come up in the story at all is that I’m the first loud-mouth I know of who’s going around singing the praises the MaidSafe and the SAFE Network. I really don’t know anyone else who is doing this yet besides me. I find this very disturbing and I don’t like this at all…not one bit…not even a little bit.

I don’t like being the only one doing what I’m doing. I am sure there must be others but whoever they are, wherever they are, their voices haven’t yet reached my ears. Maybe they’re speaking different languages other than English, I don’t know. If that’s the case, then I can accept the possibility that I just don’t know about them yet…but I’m not sure about it.

I’ve got this sneaky suspicious feeling that I’m alone or almost alone and it bothers me.

So, this is where you come into the story.

This is where you get to come inside the story I’m writing right now. Don’t wait…just jump onto the page right now! Come on! Imagineer it! You could do it!

Hey, what’s that? Oh, it’s a persona. Yeah, I remember now. A persona is a digital person who has a dedicated function. What’s he doing?

Looks like he’s transferring a package of ones and zeros somewhere. Hey there’s another one and another over there and another there too! Look!

Okay, I see what’s going on here. The SAFE Network is new. There’s not much going on here yet.

Would you look at that? It’s an email application. And over there, look! There’s a peer-to-peer video telephony application like Skype. Good thing, David Irvine got in touch w/ Michael Jackson (the talented programmer, not the pop star). And here, see there’s a Dropboxx-like app for storing data and files.

But, other than this, there doesn’t seem to be much inhabiting this new internet, does there? What should we do?

I know, let’s get together and think of cool apps we want to build. I already started doing this with Chadrick Mahaffey. We’re going to build BuildItHub and SAFEx. You can read about these and join into conversations in the SAFE cafe that’s now being broadcast over Google+ hangouts. And best of all, you can join your talents to ours and help us to form our wise crowd that we still need for both of these OVNs.

The SAFE Cafe is brand NEW. I just came up with the idea not too long ago after Jamie Nelson, host of When the Bit Hits the Fan interviewed me about MaidSafe and asked me what I was doing with Chadrick building BuildItHub and SAFEx.

I realized that we, meaning all of us, all the SAFE Network pioneers and earliest adopters needed a place to gather and to just talk, to get to know each other and to hear each other’s ideas, see each others’ faces, have some virtual human contact not just in forums and through blog posts.

Forums and blog posts have their place but we need more. We need to use existing tools like Google+ hangouts, SoundCloud (thanks, Francis for posting my interview with Freya Stevens! Oh man, this is too much! Look it’s a virtual DisneyWorld! Ol’ Walt sure would be proud of his team of imagineers! Looks like the big studios are harnessing the SAFE Network’s mega-computing power to run their visual effects applications now just like VFXstudio99 over there!

Okay, I’m getting hungry, Jack. Let’s go over to that Pizza Hut app and spend a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of my valuable SafeCoin on a really delicious pizza. We’ll order a Pizza and some Cokes and then we’ll pop back through the computer screen. By the time we’re done with the rest of this article, the delivery man should be at my door.

Jill, just leave 99% Rebel over there in that encrypted parking garage next to the SAFEx kiosk. Once we store the Tesla in plain sight and the SAFE Network disassembles it into little virtual nuts and bolts so it’s completely unrecognizable to anyone, no one will even know it’s there or what those encrypted pieces and parts really are. So, we don’t have to worry about anyone stealing it. We’ll come back when it’s really 2025 and I’ll decrypt it again (I’m the only authorized user) and we’ll take 99% Rebel out for another spin, maybe we’ll go back to the future again and see how far the SAFE Network and civilization has advanced.
