Lighting cuts
 through the night sky,

the city,
 a pale phantom
 behind every flash.

Raindrops stop

in sudden bright

icy deluge of the night.

The evening’s storm,
a ballad of squalls and torrents.

Beauty sings
 in the way thunder
makes the city shake,

in the way buildings shiver
in roaring waves of rain.

All together we drown
 in lightning
 and rain
 and thunder
and the ghosts of ourselves,
eidolons of nature,
in this baptism of fury and tempests.
