A recent poll released by Us for Autonomy demonstrates that a clear majority of Americans with disabilities agree that MAID should be legal.

For years, opponents of Death with Dignity have said people living with disabilities don’t support medical aid in dying, claiming that this population might be coerced into using this end-of-life option. But now, a new disability rights advocacy group, Us for Autonomy, has released the results of a national poll, which found that 79% of respondents who live with a disability believe that “medical aid in dying (MAID) should be legal for terminally ill, mentally capable adults who chose to self-ingest medication to die peacefully.”

Additionally, 73% of respondents who live with someone that has a disability are also in favor of MAID becoming legal. What is also important to note is political affiliation had little impact on the results, with 79% of Democrats, 65% of Republicans, and 83% of Independents in favor of legalized MAID. These findings continue to demonstrate that a clear majority of Americans with disabilities agree that MAID should be legal.

The faulty oppositional narrative continues to surface in every state where Death with Dignity legislation is considered, despite the numerous safeguards included in legislation to protect patients from abuse or coercion. In fact, there are no verified instances of this law being used against a person with disabilities.

More than anything, what this poll reminds supporters and activists is that the public is on our side! Our opponents’ attempts to suggest otherwise are brazen misrepresentations.

The poll was conducted by Susquehanna Polling & Research, Inc., who have been highly rated by 538.
