NO EXCUSE FOR ABUSE
In this blog we’ll be talking about a topic that is very common among all of us. It’s so frequent in today’s world that it might be happening to anyone around you, someone you know, someone you might not know or maybe even you; Abuse. Let’s start with its basic definition. Treating a person with cruelty, giving them a violent treatment, especially on a regular basis is abuse. People often think that violence and misimploiting is only when one physically hits someone; but that’s not the case, abuse, can be in any form:
Physical abuse, being, hitting, pushing, kicking.
Sexual, touching someone inappropriately, molestation and even rape.
Emotional/ Verbal, it really does exist, something as simple as calling someone, “ worthless’’ , “stupid” or humilaiting them or even watching someone else getting abused by someone.
It’s so common and recurrent in today’s world that one might not even be able to make out that they’re a victim of it, which also makes it hard to understand. It’s not always the fault of the victim either, sometimes even the abuser doesn’t know that they’re making someone’s life miserable but that is rarely the case. Most of the time people know what they’re doing to someone.
It has been estimated that 10 million people per year are abused. One in four women and one in nine men are victims of the same; not just adults, children have been the prime victims of abuse as well. No one is immune to this, not even celebrities. You might think that celebs with their lavish lives are all set and have nothing to worry about but that’s actually not quite the case. Let’s take some examples. Recently a case was seen of a 19 year old football player of the team Manchester United, Mason Greenwood who was arrested on suspision of raping and assualting his 17 year old girlfriend. He still remains in custody and is being closely monitored until all the facts surface.
These types of cases are extremely common and because women are the ones who are mostly the victims in such cases people have developed a stereotype that men are the wrong doers every time. But this wasn’t what went down in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s messy court battle. The actor was accused of domestic violence and faced a legal battle in July 2020. Heard stated that Depp abused her physically and verbally. In return the Pirates of the Caribbean actor flipped the script and accused her of the same. “She hit, punched, and kicked me. She also repeatedly and frequently threw objects into my body and head, including heavy bottles, soda cans, burning candles, television remote controls, and paint thinner cans, which severely injured me,” Depp claimed in court documents related to a separate defamation lawsuit in May 2019. People were leaning on the women’s side of the story until in 2020 the judge ruled Depp’s case to be true.
As the younger generation we need to start thinking about how can we can stop all this from happening, here are some ways:
Firstly take time to learn what abuse actually is, so that it is easier for you to recognise it.
Make boundaries in relationships and be assertive while communicating them, if the person doesn’t respect that, consider it a red flag and drop them.
Teach other people about the concept and spread awareness, you never know who might need it.
Take care of yourself and don’t hesitate in helping people around you if you come across such a situation.
These were some ways to take a step towards putting a stop to abuse. Implement them and try to come up with other ways as well.
It is important that we stop stereotyping, making assumptions and start thinking about how to prevent abuse and stop it when we see it happening, no matter who did it.
