Some simple effective steps to being more grounded….
What does it mean to be grounded? Let’s start by thinking of what it means to be ungrounded. Often it means that you are in your head, thoughts constantly whirring, no real awareness of feelings in your body. No real awareness of the present moment. For some of us being in our heads can be so bad it can cause anxiety, panic attacks, vertigo, dizziness and lots of other quite unpleasant feelings.
Being grounded is feeling solid, feeling as though you are centered, you can think before you speak and there is an awareness of your feelings in your body, you can access all of yourself more easily.
To ground, simply put, you need to move your focus from your head to your feet. Here are some ways to do this:
1. Imagine that your feet are heavy and connect with all the different parts of your feet; each toe, the metatarsals, the skin and the bone. Feel the connection between the soles of your feet and the ground underneath. Keep your focus on the connection between your soles and the earth underneath.
2. Take your attention to the base of your spine and imagine you have strong roots coming out of your spine and down your legs, through your feet and into the earths core-your anchor. Stay with this image and the feelings evoked for a while.
3. Connect with your legs and be aware of all of the muscles, tissue and bone in your legs and feel their power and strength. imagine them becoming heavier and heavier.
4. Now be aware of all the energy and heaviness that is now in the bottom half of your body, sit with that feeling for as long as you can.
Keep practicing these simple exercises… simply put, this gets you out of your head. These exercises can be very effective. Remember that it is about your moving attention and focus from your head in to your feet or body to create an even distribution of your energy!
