Building a data team is a lot like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. There are so many pieces, each with its unique shape and role, that it can feel pretty overwhelming. Reflecting on my decade of experience in assembling these teams, reminds me a lot of how Nick Fury had to bring together the Avengers to save the world.

In this series of three articles, we’ll dive into the key roles you’ll encounter in a data project. I’d love to hear about your experiences too, whether you’ve been on the hiring side or the interviewee side. Share your thoughts and let’s compare notes!

1. Technology Manager — Nick Fury

Role: The Technology Manager oversees the technological direction and strategy of the data team, ensuring alignment with business goals and coordinating tech resources.

Avenger Parallel: Nick Fury, with his strategic oversight and ability to bring the team together, represents the Technology Manager. Just as Fury coordinates the Avengers’ efforts, the Technology Manager directs the technological strategy and resources to support the data team’s mission.

2. Data Architect — Vision

Role: The Data Architect designs the overall structure and strategy for data management, ensuring data systems are scalable and integrated effectively.

Avenger Parallel: Vision, with his analytical mind and ability to see the bigger picture, is akin to the Data Architect. Just as Vision provides a strategic vision for the Avengers, the Data Architect creates the blueprint for data systems, ensuring they are well-designed and future-proof.

3. Business Analyst — Peter Parker (Spider-Man)

Role: The Business Analyst focuses on interpreting data to provide actionable insights that guide business decisions. They transform data findings into practical recommendations.

Avenger Parallel: Peter Parker, with his keen observational skills and ability to connect with people, parallels the Business Analyst. Just as Spider-Man uses his powers to understand and address issues in his community, the Business Analyst uses data to identify and address business needs. Plus, they are also the most creative photographers (generally)
