Ched Evans: Does he deserve a second chance?

A topic that has been very hot in the last week is the release of convicted rapist and ex-footballer, Ched Evans. There has been much debate as to whether Evans should be allowed to play football ever again and it’s emerged today that Evans is going to begin training with his former club, Sheffield United. There are enormous problems that could arise with the club allowing this to happen; their image could be damaged forever. It’s already arose that one of the club’s current sponsors, DBL Logistics will end its association if they allow Evans to rejoin the club and it’s also reported that three club patrons have already resigned over the matter. There’s no guarantee Evans will perform at the same level after he served 5 years in prison so there is much uncertainty around how long his professional career could last. I personally cannot see how this could benefit the club in any way possible. There are so many factors that come into play and could affect the club’s reputation and dignity, if it hasn’t already been damaged by allowing him to train and associate himself with the club since his sentence ended. Jessica Ennis-Hill, London’s 2012 heroin has come out saying that she will request to have the stand that is named after her at Hillsborough, another aspect which may influence the club’s decision. The fans could also turn their backs on the club and create unwanted bad media, reduction in ticket sales and therefore sponsors could also follow DBL Logistics in ending their sponsorship with the club. However, there’s a little voice in my head saying ‘he’s done his time, everyone deserves a second chance’. Then again, his offence was very serious and Sheffield United as a club will want to be seen as professional and with integrity, however I fear it may lack lose this if they decide to reemploy Evans due to his high profile career. It also doesn’t show a good example to young fans and may affect the support of this generation for the club. Honestly, I cannot decide but I feel that the cons outweigh the pros.
