Using technology to upgrade democracy.
We are living in the age of AI, decentralised currencies, open border and globalisation and we still count the votes on paper. We still go there physically and we still vote once every four years (or more, or not at all).
Democracy was founded on the simple idea that all men are equal and all men have the same weight of opinion and as such, the same privilege of creating policies. This in the recent years has changed into the democracy of representatives, and it was done mainly for practical reasons. You see, having millions of people voting on a bill is not practical with today’s procedures.
But why should we adhere to today’s procedures? Now more than ever our society has the option and the ability to reach the original democracy, the direct democracy. Information is spread everywhere and it is ridiculously easily accessible. Internet allows us to vote from our PCs or mobiles and as a result of the reduced logistics. Vote more frequently.
We use disruptive innovation on how we eat, how we buy groceries and how we drink juices but we are OK with using papers for governing ourselves.
It is time we bring democracy to the 21st century.
