[YC Startup School] Looking for a catchy domain name? We already found you some!
Startup School is a free online educational program for startup founders looking to get guidance and turning an idea into a startup. A 10-week course is presented by Y Combinator (YC) partners and alumnus. It is worth mentioning that Startup School graduates now represent the largest single source of founders accepted into YC’s core program. The good news is that there is still time for startups to register since the sign up deadline has moved to August 4th, 2019.
We are grateful to be part of this year’s SS19. It is fascinating to see the number of participants for this year’s Startup School has significantly increased, as Kevin Hale tweeted on July 24th, 2019. The total number of startups in the Prototype and Idea phase is 10,800.
As a startup, finding a catchy and informative name for the business is a crucial and time-consuming task, especially the domain name. This is the problem we faced in the past, something that inspired us to build a product called DeepNamer, which was launched in May 2019. DeepNamer is an AI-powered domain name generator and deep brainstorming platform that helps startups and entrepreneurs find catchy domain/business name for free. We even used our AI algorithm to find our name, “DeepNamer”.
To find a domain name with DeepNamer, users simply need to input a list of keywords that describe their company. The AI model then suggests a list of available names that relate to the business. Users are then able to browse the list and choose one or multiple names that they feel are the best fit or get the idea from the suggestion list.
Our platform is free and we invite anyone who is looking for a name to use it. We are hoping that our tool will pull some weight off startup founders shoulder by suggesting creative names.
We just decided to do something that does not scale as recommended by YC to startups. We selected a few startups in each vertical from SS19 directory that does not have a domain name, and used their company description as the input to DeepNamer to generate domain names for them.
Based on our analysis of YC backed companies, more than 84% of them use .com TLD for their domains. This was also stated and recommended by Michael Seibel (CEO of YC) and Adora Cheung (YC Partner) in the YC office hour we had with them back in May 2019. Thus, we suggest .com domains at this stage.
We would like to point out that we randomly selected companies, and the domains are handpicked for them.
