World Toilet Day

This weekend we celebrated World Toilet Day. The 19th November is marked as World Toilet Day and aims to raise awareness about the importance of toilets and sanitation around the world.

The World Toilet Organisation was founded in 2001 to tackle a topic that is often neglected.

“Today, 2.4 billion people are struggling to stay well, keep their children alive and work their way to a better future — all for the want of a toilet.”

On Saturday people around the world came together to mark the occasion. In India, political representatives joined a rally and a drawing competition was held and in the USA ‘the big squat’took place. This squatting exercise highlights the problems that are faced by many people in the developing world where, in the absence of proper facilities, many are forced to squat in open places. Unfortunately this contributes to over 1.8 million deaths every year from diarrhoeal disease.
