Why Do You Read?

I read because I’m chasing the high. That feeling when a writer sucks me into their world and everything else recedes to the margins.

When I was nine I read Watership Down in one day, my sister in the bunk below wanted to turn off the light and sleep, but nothing could stop me from finishing it. I read Pride and Prejudice and the Illiad until they came apart at the seams. I was drawn into I Claudius so quickly, that I stood for half an hour with my bum over my chair, forgetting to sit down. When I find an author I like, I binge read their books in great marathons. When I find an author I love, I ration their books, saving them for a day when I really need that high.

I have also known book starvation, during long rural summer holidays, when I was lucky to get the public library once a week. To stave off the hunger I used to read newspapers, school books, the Encyclopedia. Before e-books, when the craving hit me, I used to get in the car in the wee hours of the morning and drive to the 24-hour Supermarket, to buy a book, any book. Joining the smokers gagging for a fag and the sugar addicts spilling chocolate onto the belt.

My name is Deirdre and I am addicted to reading.
