Franziska Iseli and Christo Hall are a couple who have managed to build a successful, growing business while still managing to follow their passion of travel and spend plenty of time outside of the office. In my conversation with them for The Dent Podcast, they told me how they use marketing for themselves and for their clients to allow them a bigger return, a more constant flow of customers and more free-time. Below, I’ll be talking about the journey they went through to get there, and what the future holds for them and their business, Basic Bananas.

It was always Franziska and Christo’s dream to build a company with the flexibility that allowed them to follow their passions like surfing and travel. They didn’t want to be stuck with a company that demanded their constant attention, so they came up with a methodology that would allow the business to take care of itself without them needing to be involved in the day-to-day operations. It was this methodology that the couple applied to their clients’ businesses, which eventually led to Basic Bananas becoming Australia’s leading marketing training organisation.

Perception: Take Charge of How Others View Your Brand, Become Irresistible, and Make a Bigger Impact

Franziska and Christo’s initial impulse to launching Basic Bananas came from seeing lots of small businesses struggling because the owners didn’t know the best way to promote their brands. A lot of companies simply throw money at their marketing problem or offer a half-hearted solution, but Franziska and Christo knew that that wasn’t the way forward. They now focus on helping businesses to find their own unique voice in marketing, not by copying what their competitors are doing or looking elsewhere in the market, but by having fun and looking for a style that best suits the company’s culture and philosophy.

However, one of the most interesting things about the Basic Bananas model is that it’s not just about growth and expanding. In fact, these guys are just enjoying where they’re at in business right now rather than pushing hard to increase their revenues. They get to enjoy their personal independence and often travel up to four months per year.

Their story’s a fantastic example of how it’s not always vital to be pushing as hard as you can to expand as quickly as possible. Growth for the sake of growth is dangerous for any business and can easily take your company in a direction you don’t want to be going in, so it’s refreshing to see Franziska and Christo taking their time.

The free time has allowed them to work in other industries such as keynote speaking, and to write and publish two bestselling books. It also means that they’re able to give all their creative energy to the clients that they have without overstretching themselves. By following their passions, they’ve been able to make a Dent in the universe, not just for themselves but for their clients too.
