Resumes (not what they used to be)
As a long time dental professional, I’ve had my share of resume distributions. I have seen information evolve and become very specific to the industry. The theory that less is more still holds true however compiling a separate portfolio of certifications and awards should be close at hand.
Resumes once began with your ‘name’ at the top, and then the all too familiar ‘Objective,’ telling the reader how wonderful we are. Think about this for a minute; if you weren’t a motivated, self-starter that takes your job/patients seriously, why would you even be there? Do away with the Objective… The reader assumes you are all that anyway. Focus on your skills.
Your name stays at the top of the page, but you also want to add a title for yourself, under your name.
For example:
Shannon
CDA Dental Assistant Phone Email LinkedIn
Far too often I have come across resumes that have no contact information at all. This is the person who does not want a job. If a person is serious about work, contact will not be a question. Multiple contact venues ought to be considered in the techy, social world we live in today. A professional site like LinkedIn is a good option should you need extra information. Add a current phone number and email address so you will never miss a message or a call. The city and state can be added if you feel it necessary.
In a few sentences, let the reader know a little bit about your professional proficiencies that relate to the position applied for. Use numbers and figures, while sprinkling in professional catch words to gain more attention. Words like ‘savings’ are like little gold nuggets to a doctor. An example would be:
‘I lead the back office of 6 professionals, into a day of 28 patients. There was 100% accuracy with patient information and vital signs. I was confident in my ability to keep cost below budget by 6.5% as I located new suppliers and sought market deals. I managed the supplies and inventory helped with under and over ordering and loss of expired materials.’
List your Professional experiences (most recent, first) with start and finish dates. Add title, place, & date then skills. For example:
Lead CDA Dental Assistant Dr. Devon Smiley (Savannah Ga.) 6/3/2000-6/11/2017
• 3-unit provisional crown- 15 minutes
• Whitening- start-finish, impression, press, trim, deliver
List your education and put all the actual/copies of the certificate, license, course, awards, letters of recommendation, etc, into individual sleeves and keep them in a 3-ring binder. This book is to be brought with you to in person interviews.
