Engagement on the Dance Floor

Every DJ’s ultimate goal is having a winning crowd. However, getting a crowd on your side can be difficult for most DJ’s.
At the bar, the DJs sees their audience grooving to their music selection at their tables as their mingling around with their friends. At this point, the DJ is eager to get them on the dance floor.
This content will provide 4 easy steps to help lead any DJ in the right direction of winning the audience of their desire. DJ’s must pull in their crowd, read their crowd, make their crowd feel special, and connect with their crowd social media.
1. Pull in Your Audience!
Be the initial idiot and GO PULL YOUR CROWD on your floor. Most DJ’s are too cool for school even when there’s literally no one on the dance floor.
Generally speaking, everyone is low-key waiting for the first person to be the idiot first.
Don’t be afraid. Go look dumb to everyone.
Let that song roll, grab your mic and go engage with your crowd to pull them in.
Talk to them and tell them “This party is going to be live!” Tell them that by the end of the night, they’ll be on the dance floor sweating. Hit a couple dance moves. DO SOMETHING!
Before your know it: What wasn’t cool is now COOL.
Now that you’ve pulled in your crowd, you can go back to your DJ controller and laptop, however, the engagement with your audience isn’t over.
2. Read Your Audience
Now you have an audience on the floor, it’s time to cater to them. Some DJ’s have the issue of playing what they want instead of what their audience wants.
This is a HUGE NO!
DJ’s can play their playlist on their way back home. If you want your crowd to stay, figure out what majority wants.
Reading your crowd to find the songs majority of the audience love is easy. Just watch their non-verbal/verbal movements.
If you play “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond and your audience is screaming the lyrics of the hook and adding “BOM BOM BOM,” you’re in good shape to play some oldies.
If you play “Shots” by LMFAO, you know they may want to hear some Hip-Hop/EDM as well if they are jumping and screaming, “SHOTS!” It’s all about reading your audience and giving the MAJORITY what they want.
After figuring out the audiences desires, DJ’s will always have that one person that requests a song the DJ knows will kill the crowd. Be nice but DON’T PLAY IT and act like you forgot.

Its never the game you play. Its all about how you play it. Reading your crowd is the best way to win the game after you’ve gotten them on your floor.
3. Make Your Crowd Feel Special
After you’ve pulled your crowd in and have read your crowd, now it’s time for more engagement by making your audience feel special.
There are multiple things you can do to show your audience you care and you’re not just a labeled,“DJ.” Show them, you’re partying just as much.
While playing that song that everyone is screaming the lyrics to, turn the volume down, grab that mic, and sing with them. Always remember: You’re not too cool for school.
Another good thing that everyone loves is photos. Have someone with you taking photos of the audience and get their social media in which we’ll talk about next.

Take a bunch of photos! In Fact, to create even more engagement, be that DJ that takes photos WITH your audience.

Show your audience they’re special and you’ll be on the road to success in the DJ business.
4. Connect With Your Audience via Social Media
You just killed the crowd and took some amazing photos. This final step is HUGE being that social media is everything with branding. GET their social media!
Social Media is the key source for brands today. Connecting with your audience on your sites can keep you engaged with them for life.
If you have an event coming up, you can promote to your audience of previous events to attend your upcoming events. Even if they can’t make it, you can share on your sites what they’ve missed when you kill another crowd. Doing so, they’ll be sure to show up to the next multiplying your audiences.

Sum it up
There are a million ways a DJ can be appealing to the crowd. It’s all depended on the DJ.
Following these four general steps will lead any DJ on the right track to success for tonight’s gig and future events!
