New A/C and Higher Bills

“I have a new Air conditioning unit but now have a higher power bill and my unit is not keeping up with the demand.”

Your power bill should not be going up because you installed a new unit, with the summer heat it has been hotter than usual lately so there could be reasons why. Actually it has been proven that when you think you are the more energy efficient you actually use MORE energy. It’s kind of backwards but when and if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.

If I think I’m really efficient maybe I’m going to bump my thermostat down a bit to 73 instead of 75 because I just bought this new unit it is more energy efficient so it should be no problem using more power because I’m more efficient. That could be one issue to make sure your habits aren’t really changing also your duct system needs to be checked, and the new unit needs to be checked.

The problem we have run into on previous installs is that the duct system has been there 30 years and now you’re installing an 18 SEER two speed unit that is really efficient and it really starts to expose the oldness of the duct system with air leaks, so check all that get your duct checked out and sealed if possible. A new efficient unit and a sealed duct system is the best combination for energy efficiency.
