One of the biggest benefits of being a business owner is that you can travel more freely. You aren’t limited to just to holidays and days off.
That’s great, but being a business owner also means you are in charge, and if you neglect your work, it can have negative consequences for your business. If you don’t run your business while travelling, you might come back to mayhem.
Missed business opportunities; suppliers not shipping products on time — the problems that could arise are endless.
You need to find a steady balance so that you can run your business while travelling.
PLAN & BALANCE YOUR DAY
Your daily routine will differ while you travel. You won’t have the same tools on hand. You’ll probably be in a different climate and time zone. You may be surrounded by a different culture and different people. That has a big impact on how you work, and without planning, it can result in you not working at all.
Now there’s nothing wrong with travelling for a full day, but be sure to set some time aside. Do some work before you set out on your adventure. Perhaps do some work while travelling to your destination. Put it in your planner.
The key to running your business is balancing your day. Plan to work. Plan to travel. Don’t focus only on business while travelling or your trip won’t be enjoyable.
On the other hand, if you focus on travel and nothing else, the days after you get back home won’t be fun at all.
The biggest problem that you’ll face while travelling is that your days will vary quite a lot. Our everyday lives are generally quite structured. When you’re away, you’re exposed to the most diverse environments, which makes a huge difference in how you work, and which is exactly why you need to plan.
If you find yourself procrastinating, we have a blog post on the topic to help you out.
THE RIGHT TOOLS AND THE RIGHT PLACE
Running a business only works if you have the right tools.
Bring everything you need for your travels but make sure you have everything you need to work too. The work-savvy bring a laptop and a sample of their product with them. You never know when you’ll get the chance to show it off.
Bring a phone if you need to make calls. Make sure that you will be able to make calls once you get to your destination and that you have a working SIM card. If not, buy the right one in advance.
If you’re going to a place with warm weather, make sure your room won’t be too hot.
You’ll be sure to have everything you need if you plan ahead and do some research.
Prepare ahead of time and check to make sure there is an internet connection, no matter where you’re headed. If not, plan what work you can do without Wi-Fi and check for nearby places that have a working connection.
