Ramadan Day 13: A Du’a For Forgiveness

And Musa (Moses) chose out of his people seventy (of the best) men for Our appointed time and place of meeting, and when they were seized with a violent earthquake, he said: “O my Lord, if it had been Your Will, You could have destroyed them and me before; would You destroy us for the deeds of the foolish ones among us? It is only Your Trial by which You lead astray whom You will, and keep guided whom You will. You are our Wali (Protector), so forgive us and have Mercy on us, for You are the Best of those who forgive. — Qur’an 7[Al-A’raf]:155

Glorified and Exalted is Allah above all His creations. May His endless benedictions be showered upon our beloved Prophet peace be upon him. Alhamdulillah! Today is the thirteenth day of Ramadan and we’re gradually approaching the midpoint. It’s time to fasten the waist belt and brace up for more good deeds. We ask Allah to grant us steadfastness, perseverance, and a great reward.

Central Message

Prophet Musa Alayhi Salam is one of my beloved characters from the Holy Quran — he was audacious, strong, and brave. It wasn’t coincidental that many of the stories in the Qur’an related to him in different capacities. His was a great mission like that of our prophet: he was given a book and sent to a difficult set of people — the children of Israel. They would only believe when it’s convenient for them and question every injunction sent upon them by the Merciful Lord.

You should be familiar with the encounter of Musa when he requested to see his Lord. On this occasion, he left his people and was speaking to Allah in privacy. However, he never had the chance to see Allah. When Allah appeared on the mount of Sinai, Musa fell unconscious as His Lord’s Superiority is beyond the human glance. Although, one of the most pleasant scenarios in paradise will be seeing the Face of Allah, the Most High, full of Bounty, Majesty, and Grace.

Let’s camelback to Musa’s story. So on returning back from the trip where he encountered his Lord, Musa met his people worshipping a calf. He became so aggrieved by what his people had done in his absence. Allah had given him an inscribed commandment on a tablet but out of rage for disbelief, he threw away the tablet and grabbed his brother Haroun by the head and pulled him closer to himself. Then what came out of Musa’s tongue was a statement of repentance:

Musa (Moses) said: “O my Lord! Forgive me and my brother, and make us enter into Your Mercy, for you are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.” Certainly, those who took the calf (for worship), wrath from their Lord and humiliation will come upon them in the life of this world. Thus do We recompense those who invent lies. But those who committed evil deeds and then repented afterwards and believed, verily, your Lord after (all) that is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. — Qur’an 7[Al-A’raf]:151–153

Key Takeaway

  • No matter how many sins you have committed, do not despair of the mercy of Allah
  • Allah forgives all sins, so long as the servant sincerely repents
  • Through trials, Allah guides those whom He wills and leads astray those whom He wishes.
  • It is by Allah’s mercy that we are guided. Therefore, do not seize to thank him and ask for steadfastness not to be lost after finding guidance

Action Point

Let’s strive our utmost best to do at least one of the following:

  1. Repent and return back to Allah at least 100 times daily
  2. Strive not to ascribe partners in worship with Allah. That’s the only sin that Allah will not forgive if one dies upon it without repentance.

We ask Allah Who has blessed us with Islam to keep us steadfast upon it, to increase us in Eeman and not take our soul except in a state of Ihsan. Ameen!
