I am participating again this year, and I’m quite excited about it. My first NaNo was in 2012, and basically my first crack at fiction. It was a success for me, because I was able to finish that rough draft within the allotted time.
Fast forward to early 2018 when I switched genres and really focused on my writing. I learned to not fight the characters; let them tell their story. In fact, by listening to them, my overall storyline turned out better than had I ignored them. My plot was railroaded, but that’s okay.
I’m going into this November with a basic plan, but now know to go whichever way the characters take me. I’m not going to fight it, because it’s futile to try. For those doing NaNo for the first time, just go with it.
My family already is aware I will be scarce throughout the month, because they have been warned. I foresee later nights and tired days, but in the end it will be worth it.
Don’t be afraid to sign up if you haven’t yet; you are in for one fun ride!
