I suck at diversity.

“The first time I got accused of white feminism, I think my response was “what the shit is white feminism?” So I got defensive, got angry, and then I calmed down and Googled. After about an hour of reading, I realized I had a problem.”

I had a similar experience when I first came back to tech. I was so conscious of the double discrimination against me (that wasn’t as rampant during my first round of programming in the 80’s and 90’s) that it took me awhile to understand. Luckily the African American woman that pointed it out to me gave me some websites to look at. Though I’ve got your 15 beat, I still haven’t worked with any black women.

The other thing to be careful about is comparing the discrimination that you receive as a woman with discrimination aimed at other minority groups, it’s not always comparable.

Hopefully soon we’ll start to better recognize the discrimination faced by economically disadvantaged people (including white people). And the oft-ignored aging. I’m in Silicon Valley and if you want to make connections with older engineers, you can find them down at the unemployment office :(
