Turning word of mouth into a mass medium

Turning word of mouth into a mass medium used to be an oxymoron. Not anymore. A single individual has now the power to influence hundreds, thousands, or even millions of consumers from the comfort of their own home using social media.

As some of us will remember there was a time when people would ask their friends and family directly for recommendations on new products or brands… there was no option to “Google it”, look at reviews on Amazon or TripAdvisor, or ask for opinions and advice in a forum.

Every brand and every organisation needs to engage with their consumers and identify those with the power to influence others! They range from micro- to celebrity-influencers. Finding the celebrities is easy but very expensive. Finding thousands or millions of micro-influencers is a little more involved but the cost of their contributions is almost neglible compared to mass advertising or celebrities.

We all agree that people believe people like them, more than they do TV commercials. As a matter of fact 40% of Twitter users have made a purchase as a direct result of a tweet from an influencer.

Imagine having 1,000 micro influencers with 1,000 followers each! The possible reach in such a case is 1 million consumers!
