Warwick, RI, — On Thursday, Paul Tavares, the former two-term General Treasurer of the State of Rhode Island, endorsed James Diossa. Rhode Island’s 28th General Treasurer, Paul Tavares, served in the office from 1999–2007, and issued the following statement:

I’m proud to endorse James Diossa for Rhode Island General Treasurer, and am looking forward to helping elect him in 2022. It is thrilling to see the next generation of leaders step forward and show their commitment to public service and to helping their community. Having served two terms as State Treasurer, and worked to establish the Collegebound Fund before that, I know that James has exactly the kind of experience Rhode Island needs. Only a handful of municipalities in the country have gone bankrupt, and Central Falls became Rhode Island’s comeback story during James Diossa’s two terms as mayor. James has a track record in executive office and proven himself to be a strong manager and a steady fiscal hand. As Treasurer, James will bring a uniquely qualified perspective to the office as a former Mayor. James’s experience growing up in Rhode Island, attending Rhode Island Public Schools, and starting a family in Rhode Island give him a different kind of experience too. He understands the struggles families all across the state are facing. Seeing James run for General treasurer makes me excited for the future.

Prior to being elected General Treasurer, Tavares served in the Rhode Island State Senate where he worked on legislation to create the Rhode Island Collegebound Fund, the state’s 529 program for college savings. Since serving as Treasurer, Tavares has worked in the private sector, served on numerous charitable and non-profit boards, as well as serving as the Executive Director of the Providence Housing Authority.
