New Batwoman Actor Javicia Leslie Portrait by Dirk Hooper

I’ve been on a long quest to get back into creating professional-level art that started about five years ago.

But the real quest began long long before that.

If you’re into doing art then you realize that improvement only comes with time and practice. I’m sure you’ve heard about how important it is to put in 10,000 hours, to master a skill. I’ve put that time in, but I started drawing seriously when I was five years old.

In his 2008 book “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell wrote that “ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness.” His examples included, Bill Gates, who was able to start coding as a teen since he attended a progressive Seattle high school , and The Beatles, who played eight-hour gigs in German clubs long before they invaded America. Those opportunities to practice early and often — along with precocious talent — allowed them to respectively invent software and modern rock and roll.

A BDSM Poem

Your voice betrays you
it’s locked by your lust

Fold your clothes, I say
structure leads to trust

Your voice betrays you
you’re ready to feed

I pinch your nipples
you hunger for seed

Your voice betrays you
awakening bliss

Sincere and gentle
I give you a kiss

Your voice betrays you
but body complies

I pry you open
I demand your reply

Your voice absolves you
and legs become weak

I pet you softly
your gift is unique

You shouldn’t see “Enter the Void.” Please disregard everything I say below and just don’t see this movie. I loved it.

Yes. I just told you to NOT see a movie that I loved.

I have a deep appreciation for movies where the director completely throws caution to the wind and creates a self — indulgent work of art. “Enter the Void” is definitely one of those films.

Nothing in “Enter the Void” is crafted with the general moviegoing public in mind. I can almost promise you that something in “Enter the Void” is going to drive you crazy.

Perhaps it’s the nearly three-hour running time. Maybe it’s the drug use, or copious sex. Or the Freudian dalliance. Or the graphic wreck. …

Adding this routine to your creative endeavors can pay off big time!

Athletes, musicians, and dancers warm-up before the big show. Artists can benefit from warming up just like everyone else.

The routine act of spending a short period of time warming up before doing a serious activity can pay off in numerous ways.

Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.
- Leonardo da Vinci

Yesterday I spent an hour penciling and inking a piece featuring the character Baby Yoda for the purposes of warming up. …

If you want to be a professional comic artist you’re going to have to put in tons of hours. It’s a market with comparatively few opportunities and competition from some amazing professional artists.

Back during the comic boom in the 90s I was creating and producing independent comics. I had stars in my eyes and made the annual trek out to the San Diego Comic-Con to talk with editors from Dark Horse, DC Comics and handfuls of indy publishers.

While I was producing some cool work (published work even), it was just shy of being good enough to get a regular gig with a big publisher. Many of the editors I talked with told me that I was very very close, but I just needed a little more work. …

A film review

What you see in “Mad Max: Fury Road” is the labor of a filmmaker who had 30 years to explore a concept, love it, refine it and finally bring it to life. There is a depth and detail to this film that puts George Miller in a rarefied pantheon of directors. This film is his seminal work.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” has a consistent theme and repeating symbolism that belies its simple exterior. It’s easy to miss amid the flamethrowers, and explosions and muscle cars; but it’s there.

The film follows “Mad” Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy, who has been in the desert wasteland too long and is haunted by the memories of those he has failed. …

This is aimed at adult content creators but there’s advice for anyone who might share adult content on Instagram.

Recently the BBC had an article titled “Why is Instagram deleting the accounts of hundreds of porn stars?

The BBC is shedding light on something that many of you already know about personally. If you are in the adult entertainment business or a sex worker of any sort Instagram has you targeted.

From the BBC article,

Hundreds of porn stars and sex workers had their Instagram accounts deleted this year, and many say they’re being held to a different standard than mainstream celebrities.

“I should be able to model my Instagram account on Sharon Stone or any other verified profile, but the reality is that doing that would get me deleted,” says Alana Evans, president of the Adult Performers Actors Guild and one of the leading voices in the battle that adult stars are waging to stay on the platform.

Adding a healthy dose of gratitude to your life can literally rewire your brain.

When I was younger I always looked forward to having an embarrassing helping of turkey and dressing on Thanksgiving. And pumpkin pie — damn it, I love pumpkin pie. It usually meant sitting at the kid's table and making conversation with cousins I never had much in common with.

Clearly, it was worth it.

Thanksgiving is now a quieter affair. Instead of the lavish gatherings we used to have I’ve spent the last few years with my parents and friends… and often eaten something besides turkey and dressing. The meaning of Thanksgiving has changed for me too.

One of the things that I’ve recently discovered is how important Thanksgiving can be if you reflect on what you’re thankful for.

You’re not alone if you’re experiencing low engagement during the holiday season.

In late November, to early January, social media engagement drops through the floor. It happens every year just like clockwork. When you start seeing Christmas ads on television realize that whatever you’re putting out there is not going to get as many likes and shares and comments as you’re used to.

The reason I mention this is because if you’re like me, and you’re a data-driven person, who likes to look at your metrics daily (maybe hourly) you’ll be banging your head against the wall trying to figure out why that great picture you just shared is getting no attention and no love whatsoever. …

Hey Star Wars fans! Did someone say “world-building?”

The Mandalorian has that.

Would you like to see new characters and situations that are not connected to the main stories?

The Mandalorian has that.

Would you like to see movie-quality effects, settings, and costumes in a television series?

The Mandalorian has that.

In fact, The Mandalorian directly answers several things Star Wars fans have been asking for in the past four decades.

I found nearly everything about The Mandalorian to be refreshing, interesting, promising, and well done.

As suspected the creators of this new series have taken the “man with no name” Western concept and plopped it right in the middle of the Star Wars universe. …
