My initial knee-jerk reaction was to disagree with your bold “VR will turn out to be a dud” sub heading.

>> At some point (years out) the right mixture of power, size, price, and reality technology will combine into a device that will see mass adoption (likely first in AR not VR)

But then I gave it some thought, and it came to me.

The biggest shortcomings are:

  • lack of bigger field of view in VR headsets
  • lack of quality/resolution of rendered environments.

Meanwhile a good AR headset / glasses will

  • Have the largest fov.
  • Use the real world as an environment to overlay “virtual/agumented” entities

This of-course, a̶s̶s̶u̶m̶i̶n̶g when Hololens like AR glasses offer wider screen overlays.
